The Nurse Consultant works at the direction of the Health Coordinator. The Nurse Consultant agrees to provide services to Illinois Action for Children’s Early Learning Programs on a timely basis in compliance with all federal, state and local requirements.

The consultant will be expected to promote and adhere to the workplace core capabilities of: accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement, communication, competent people and clear priorities. All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organization standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. The organization reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time.

These services include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Complete the Early Head Start postpartum home visit with parent(s) within two weeks of delivery.
  • Obtain the newborn baby’s height, weight, length, and head circumference during two week postpartum visit.
  • Provide health information to parent(s) during postpartum visits (i.e. postpartum care, parent mental health, sleep safety, nutrition, lead exposure, consequences of tobacco products, etc.).
  • Provide trainings to parents on prevalent health topics at monthly site Parent Meetings where required (i.e. medical and oral health care, emergency first aid, environmental hazards, and health and safety practices for the home, etc.).
  • Provide staff trainings on prevalent health topics including infant care.
  • Conduct weekly site visits to Early Head Start classrooms to complete heights, weights, length, BMI for infants and toddlers.
  • Document visits at all EHS sites for data collection in accordance with EHS guidelines for health related child outcomes.
  • Support program family engagement staff in engaging parents in identifying and accessing health services and resources that are responsive to their interests and goals.
  • Consultations with parents in regards to health concerns (where required).
  • Participate in center health related events.
  • Observation of Early Head Start classroom practices carried out by personnel (example: diapering, feeding, sanitizing, and supervision).
  • Ensure program compliance with DCFS licensing health requirements for infants and toddlers.
  • Review and assessment of child immunization records and health forms.
  • Execute our workplace core capabilities of: accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement (CQI), communication, competent people, and clear priorities.
  • Independently work on multiple tasks effectively in support of department.
  • Other functions: The organization may assign other functions to the job at its discretion.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must possess a Illinois Registered Nurse state licensure. Previous experience working in an early learning setting, conducting post-partum visits in the home setting is preferred. Experience working in Head Start performance standards is a plus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation between program sites required. Illinois Registered Nurse state license

Location: Southwest suburbs of Chicago

$75 per hour (to be invoiced by consultant to IAFC)
