JOB TITLE – Nurse (RN/LPN)

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES – Responsible for 24-hour medical monitoring and supervision of study participants; direct supervision of Patient Care Technicians on the inpatient unit.

SUPERVISES – Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)


DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Provides supervision of Patient Care Technicians to ensure patient safety
  • Ensures all PCT documentation is accurate and complete
  • Ensures all PCT duties have been completed to company and sponsor/protocol-specific guidelines, including, but not limited to: chart documentation, meal compliance, shift report completion, etc.
  • Ensures all patient rooms are checked daily for cleanliness and safety
  • Administers medication per protocol and medical standards
  • Provides general nursing care to study participants as necessary; including, but not limited to: monitoring of vitals, blood sugar, etc.
  • Observes and monitors the physical and mental status of study participants throughout shift
  • Communicates in a timely manner to the study staff all notable participant issues
  • Provides a daily verbal and written report at shift change
  • Assures that study participants are engaged in planned activities and are allowed supervised access to the Activity Room
  • Assures proper documentation is in each study participant’s record: shift notes, orders, MAR, etc.
  • Ensures all delegated responsibilities are completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Identifies potential crisis situations; intervenes in a calm, professional manner
  • Completes all required forms for admissions and discharges
  • Performs nightly chart audits to ensure all forms are complete, present and accurate
  • Performs Q12 hour physician order checks to assure timely and accurate transcription of orders onto Medical Administration Records
  • Obtains vital signs, lab specimens (blood and urine), and EKGs when necessary
  • Calls in prescription orders and refills to pharmacies per physician orders
  • Handles telephone inquiries in a professional and courteous manner
  • Answers incoming calls when required; takes complete messages and notifies appropriate personnel
  • Maintains confidentiality for study participants at all times
  • Maintains current knowledge to assure a safe working environment and demonstrates practical application of all policies and procedures relative to safety and infection control
  • Utilizes universal precautions in any potential contact with study participant body fluids or used participant supplies that may be contaminated with participant body fluids
  • Projects a positive image of the facility in all interactions
  • Supports effective team functioning
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION – Graduation from an approved school of nursing is required

EXPERIENCE – 1-3 years of nursing experience; Psych experience preferred

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE – Current RN/LPN certification required; CPR training provided

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS – Standard operating hours are seven days a week, twenty-four hours per day, 365 days a year. Standard shifts are in twelve-hour increments. May be required to complete job-related tasks outside of that time frame, in excess of a standard 40-hour work week. Requires prolonged walking, standing, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Requires occasional lifting of boxes up to 50 pounds. Work is performed in a medical office environment and includes exposure to blood-born pathogens and bio-hazardous materials. This role requires the ability to work with a broad range of personalities, situations and psychiatric disorders; therefore, candidates must possess the ability to resolve conflicts immediately and diffuse potentially escalating events before they occur.
