Under the direction of the Business Manager, the Utility Mechanic is responsible for:
Painting and rigging work throughout McLean Fernside to maintain the interiors and exteriors of all buildings, structures, equipment and grounds, as specified by industry and hospital standards. Installation and maintenance of all hospital equipment and machinery within state and insurance requirements. Other maintenance duties as assigned.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrates the ability to:
Perform painting of patient rooms, corridors and other areas
Perform minor plaster and patchwork
Install wallpaper and murals
Perform spray painting using both airless and conventional guns
Perform stripping and refinishing of furniture
Perform painting of driveway parking striping lines
Use up to 36’ ladders
Clean exterior gutters
Performs both maintenance painting and painting associated with construction projects.
Assures area of painting is properly prepared by cleaning surface and patching uneven spots according to department standards
Prepares walls to be painted on new construction work, i.e. taping seams and applying joint compound to all seams, edges, etc.
Assures all areas around painting site are protected according to department guidelines, as demonstrated by no damage being reported after painting has been complete
Cleans work areas during and after painting according to department standards
Minimizes noise and disruption, especially to patient rooms and common areas
Accommodates resident needs and the department’s changing space needs throughout the day
Maintains painting supplies according to department guidelines
Performs all assigned painting work and related duties correctly, with minimal direction, and according to appropriate hospital, industry and OSHA safety guidelines and regulations
Performs floor refinishing; power washing; furniture repair; lighting maintenance; minor plumbing repairs; air conditioner cleaning, set up and storage; exterior plant watering and maintenance; walkway sweeping; and van detailing as assigned and other duties as assigned.
Maintains tools, parts, etc, in neat, orderly fashion and maintains a neat, safe and productive work area.
Completes all corrective and preventative work orders and job assignments on a daily basis and notifies supervisor that work has been completed and tested.
Assists other tradesmen and/or outside contractors when assigned.
Contributes to Facility’s safe operation by taking all precautions required by hospital and OSHA requirements.
Performs all duties as assigned, within and outside the scope of this job description.

Education: High School or trade school graduate
License: Valid Motor Vehicle driver’s license required. Construction trades license preferred.
Experience: 3-year apprenticeship or equivalent on the job training AND 2 years’ experience preferred.
Knowledge: Knowledge of various building trades and management skills
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
Knowledge of state and local building codes, blueprint reading and use of tools and materials. Knowledge of industry and OSHA safety guidelines and regulations. Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a job.
Ability to understand, interpret and communicate instructions clearly and accurately.
Ability to visualize objects of two and three dimensions.
Good hand, eye, foot, and finger dexterity. Good at assessing colors.
All employees must possess basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes. (Required)
Working Conditions
Works both inside and outside and in all types of weather conditions. Normal requirements associated with the trade and plant construction and maintenance field. Ability to shovel snow during weather emergency, as well as other duties as assigned.
Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 25 to 100 pounds while climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing and crawling.
