Job Description
Under general supervision, the Mechanic conducts skilled mechanic work including maintenance and repair of gas and diesel engines, including both small and heavy equipment. Employee diagnoses, adjusts, re-aligns and/or repairs trucks, trailers, float vehicles, light towers, generators, gators, mowers, and a wide variety of power tools and park maintenance equipment with little to no assistance. Employee also assists with special events support activities for all city sponsored or supported events such as the Holiday Parade, Marathon, 4th of July, Palmfest and others.
Job Responsibilities
1. Reviews work orders with supervisor(s) to obtain descriptions of vehicle or equipment problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
2. Implements work orders based on established procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience; prepare time-tables for completion of job and cost estimates for parts to be used.
3. Inspects, tests and evaluate defective vehicles/equipment to determine the extent of damage or malfunction(s) by testing components and systems using instruments such as diagnostic charts, pressure gauges and computerized diagnostic devices.
4. Raises light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment using hydraulic jacks or electrical hoists.
5. Follows checklists to ensure all important parts are examined.
6. Repairs and maintains engines and engine parts, such as fuel injection systems, carburetors, compressors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
7. Tears down, repairs, and rebuilds faulty assemblies, such as hydraulic systems, power systems, steering systems and linkages.
8. Repairs, re-aligns, replaces, and/or adjusts brakes, shock absorbers, or other suspension components and re-assembling equipment as necessary.
9. Performs routine maintenance such as checking oil, power steering, radiator and batteries; lubricates equipment and machinery.
10. Keeps working area clean and orderly.
11. Conducts work activities in a safe and responsible manner.
12. Assists with other mechanic or manual labor work as directed by management staff.
13. Provides support for a variety of special events hosted by or supported by the City of McAllen.
14. Position requires driving and operating motor vehicles and other equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Job requires a minimum of three (3) years work experience as a mechanic.
3. Job requires a valid Texas Class C Driver"s License
4. Job requires a thorough technical and mechanical knowledge of all phases of both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment to perform the tasks as assigned in an effective and expedient manner.
5. Employee must be capable of working with all mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, soldering iron and other small tools and hand held tools required to perform maintenance/repairs.
Physical Requirements
Employee may be exposed to extreme outdoor conditions, continuous lifting of heavy materials, constant physical movement and demands physical strength associated with hard labor or forceful physical contact. Additional Information
1. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

2. This position is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol and testing.

3. Work may include working evenings, weekends, holidays, and during hurricane or other emergencies.
