The incumbent will be a dental specialist treating pediatric and handicapped patients within all the clinics of the TCRHCC Dental Program. Performs a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures, as well as specialized pediatric care including that of medically compromised pediatric patients. Treatment will be performed in both a clinical and operating room settings. The incumbent will also be credentialed to perform emergent dental care as needed for patients of any age per the needs of the Dental Program.

Physical:
Work is sometimes sedentary and sometimes active; good eye-hand coordination and concentration is required. Work involves danger of exposure to radiation and communicable diseases. Incumbent uses lead shields to protect against radiation and wears face masks and gloves during treatment procedures. Position requires prolonged sitting, talking, or hearing; pushing/pulling; and, use of hands to finger, handle, or feel. It also requires extensive periods of standing; and reaching with hands and arms. Occasionally incumbent will need to be able to walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently requires that weight be lifted, or force be exerted up to 10 pounds and infrequently up to 25 pounds. This position requires the ability to hear alarms on equipment, client calls, instructions from physicians/department staff; and, overhead pages from loudspeaker. Work requires the incumbent to have close, color, peripheral vision; and, depth perception with the ability to adjust focus. The incumbent must be able to perform prolong periods of repetitive motion actions using both hands; grasping simple/light; fine dexterity; and, occasionally in grasping firm/heavy. They must also be able to frequently use repetitive motion actions of foot control.
Mental:
Considerable ingenuity, original thinking and independent judgment are exercised and required of the incumbent. He/She is working with a group of people initially unfamiliar with health standards, the necessity for preventive care and other essential health needs. The incumbent must be able to cope with problems and make judgments and evaluations of the situation and type of care needed, and refer those of a more complicated nature to a specialist.
Environmental:
This job requires exposure to the following environmental conditions: prolong working near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; and, vibrations. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Infrequent exposure to risk of radiation. The typical noise level for the work environment is moderate.
Responsibilities:- Making oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity, and a diagnosis of pathological and irregular condition.
- Performs restoration of simple and compound cavities with standard and prescribed material (cement, amalgam, silicate, etc.), space maintenance, and limited orthodontic treatment.
- Full mouth restoration in operating room under general anesthesia for pediatric and handicapped patients.
- Administering local anesthesia.
- Proficient in appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Performing single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth.
- Scaling of calculus, and curettage.
- Treating mouth and gum infections.
- Recognizing symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and referring cases for medical diagnosis.
- May be called upon to provide routine or emergent care for adult patients as needed.
- Will act as associate professor for pediatric dental residency if established; Will be responsible for direction and supervision of pediatric dental residents in all phases of pediatric dentistry.
- Will be involved with HPDP activities and programs aimed at pediatric patient population (e.g.. Fluoride varnish program, Head Start, WIC, etc.)
- May be required to perform up to 20% Area duties with regards to teaching continuing education courses, Area HPDP activities/projects, providing consultation to other service units.
- Acts as Liaison to the Navajo and Hopi Head Start Programs and to the group(s) contracted to treat Head Start children.
- Basic Computer Skills for completing any necessary administrative tasks.
- Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) program; Training will be provided.
- Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction.
- Completes all patient care documentation in the electronic health record entries accurately and in real-time.
- Participates in departmental workflow and or testing teams as related to electronic health record or other project initiatives
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
