POSITION SUMMARY

Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital Internal Medicine residents must meet the qualifications for resident eligibility as outlined in the ACGME Institutional Requirements and MLKCH Resident Selection Policy. Resident education involves supervised, progressively more complex and independent patient evaluation and patient management functions and formal educational activities. Accordingly, the competency of each resident is evaluated on a regular basis. Residents provide care commensurate with their level of advancement and competence, under the general supervision of appropriately privileged attending teaching staff. It is each resident's responsibility to notify their immediate supervisor and to seek assistance if there are any issues that may jeopardize patient safety, or if the resident feels they are being asked to function beyond their level of competence.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. While in the training program, all residents without exception will function under the supervision of a staff practitioner. The training programs will be structured to encourage and permit residents and fellows to assume increasing levels of responsibility commensurate with their individual growth process in experience, skill, knowledge, and judgment. The following duties are required of all residents:

1. Initiate and follow a personal program of professional growth in conjunction with the formal educational and training of the residency program sponsored by MLKCH. This includes ensuring compassionate, appropriate and cost-effective patient care. Skills demonstrated by the resident should be commensurate with their level of training and responsibility.

2. Communicate effectively with their supervising attending regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis.

3. Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by their discipline under the supervision of the attending staff. Residents may write orders and progress notes in patient charts, although attending physicians retain responsibility for the care of patients seen by residents and must review the care of their patients.

4. Participate in the educational activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and medical students by making daily rounds.

5. Adhere to the 80-hour work week standards set forth by the ACGME and record all clinical and educational work hour logs in New Innovations.

6. Perform procedures, which are specified by each program director, under the direct supervision of attending physician. Resident may only perform those procedures for which the attending physician has privileges. Once the resident has performed the appropriate number of procedures in a competent fashion the program director will provide notification that the resident is eligible to be certified to perform the procedure without direct supervision.

7. Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to resident's level of education, ability and experience. The program director and the attending staff will determine the resident's level of responsibility and autonomy.

8. Meet institutional requirements with respect to medical records.

9. Participate on committees and councils whose actions affect resident education and patient care. These include:

The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) meetings. Residents must be peer-selected.

The Resident Forum

Applicable performance improvement committees at teaching institutions

10. Participate in institution-sponsored Interdisciplinary Grand Rounds or other program- specific didactic educational experiences.

11. Participate in educational programs dealing with physician impairment, substance abuse, sexual harassment, sleep deprivation, and fatigue mitigation.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

1) Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); OR

2) Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); OR

3) Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:

a) Holds a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or

b) Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty-/subspecialty program.
