Job Description
Summary:
The Preparations Technician works in collaboration with the Chemistry Prep Room Manager to support all functions relating to successful implementation of chemistry teaching labs. This includes activities related to the proper inventory, upkeep, validation, and preparation of chemical solvents, reagents, solutions, unknowns, glassware, instruments, and basic lab supplies. The Preparations Technician is also responsible for aiding the Manager in supervising work-study students while maintaining an organized and safe environment, as well as addressing the immediate needs of lab instructors to resolve unforeseen issues when reasonably possible. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with functions related to instrumentation or Environmental Health and Safety activities.

  • Quality Control activities (Inventory, record upkeep, validations)

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Chemistry Prep Room Manager in supervising 3-5 student workers each semester.
Basic Qualifications:
  • BA/BS or Associates in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Experience in an educational or laboratory research environment strongly desired.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Essential skills include experience in preparing chemical solutions, performing routine chemical experiments, using standard chemical instrumentation or equipment, and a history of following appropriate safety protocols. The position requires strong communication skills with faculty, manager, and students, as well as attention to detail. General computer skills for communication, reviewing or writing documents, and maintaining electronic inventories is also required.
  • A desire to work hands-on with students is strongly preferred, and interests in partnering with faculty to consider pedagogical aspects of the laboratory curriculum will be considered.
  • Skills considered beneficial, though not required, include experience with analytical instrumentation, following standard operating procedures (SOPs), and hazardous materials/waste handling.
Other:
  • This role is working full time hours (35 hours/wk) and 11 months of the year (August - June). This is a regular, ongoing assignment, benefits eligible.
