Summary
The Production Manager assists the Plant Manager in leading and developing a manufacturing operations vision and direction for the future. Responsible for all manufacturing operations activities and issues when Plant Manager is absent from the facility. Leads, directs, and coordinates activities of production department(s) in processing materials or manufacturing products in an industrial organization by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position are:
- Reviews production orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan department operations.
- Plans and is responsible for manpower, machines, materials, and methods.
- Plans production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products.
- Reviews and prepares operational schedules and coordinates manufacturing activities to ensure production and quality of products meets specifications.
- Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
- Takes the lead in analyzing bottlenecks and areas of downtime, which could adversely impact customer satisfaction. Actively responds with positive actions to solve problems.
- Responsible for self-sufficient procurement and development of subcontract suppliers.
- Works closely with the Plant Manager and shop personnel to continuously improve and standardize current processes; develops and implements improved processes and incorporates into designs.
- Investigates and troubleshoots process problems as they occur and takes necessary corrective actions.
- Confers with Design Engineering to assure designs fit the best manufacturing processes. Requests engineering changes to reduce costs, improve quality, or decrease manufacturing times. Coordinates implementation of approved changes.
- Leads continuous improvement efforts throughout the facility. Works to modify and continuously improve processes to enhance quality, decrease cycle times, stabilize processes, and/or reduce costs.
- Completes manufacturing method sheets and CNC programs as required. Analyzes drawings, sketches, and design data of parts to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, selection of cutting tools and machine speeds, and feed rates.
- Designs and manufactures fixtures to support the production of parts.
- Analyzes routings during programming stage and updates processes to guarantee CNC machine tools are used to their fullest capability.
- Carries out and is supportive of company policies in all areas. This includes, but is not limited to policies involving human resources, safety, personal conduct, practices involving quality, control of purchased and manufactured parts.
- Collaborates with other areas and teams within the company, maintaining good will, and production schedules.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly leads shift supervisors in the plant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting the Plant Manager and Human Resources in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
