Powdermill Nature Reserve is Carnegie Museums of Natural History's environmental research center. Located 55 mile southeast of Pittsburgh in Rector, Pennsylvania, Powdermill is a field station and laboratory where researchers do long-term studies of natural populations in western Pennsylvania. In addition to being positioned for Appalachian-specific studies in ornithology, ecology, invertebrate zoology, and botany, Powdermill is a great place to spend a fun-filled day outdoors with the family. The Public Projects Manager is responsible for managing major program areas while participating in a team approach to the smooth development and delivery of learning experiences and programs at Powdermill Nature Reserve (PNR), the environmental research center of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Duties include managing presentation staff, leading curriculum development, and coordinating facility resources within Learning, in collaboration with all team members at PNR and with other departments and divisions.
This position works collaboratively with the museum’s Learning & Community and Science & Research departments to plan and deliver innovative education programs to audiences that include children, families, schools, teachers, college students, and adults. This position builds relationships with communities, including local residents, schools, and researchers with the goal of strengthening learning opportunities locally and regionally. Attention to customer service and creating a welcoming experiences that foster learning and curiosity about nature is essential.
This position leads interpretive strategy to make Powdermill research and natural history accessible for a wide range of audiences. This includes leading education programs for adults and college-level audiences, presenting public nature lectures and walks, guiding school field trips, managing summer day camps and supervising a team of educators who welcome guests to the Nature Center and implement seasonal education programs.
Regular weekend work and occasional evenings are required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Prefer M.S. in natural science, environmental education, outdoor park and resource management or similar field.
- B.S. required and experience with staff management, budget management, and/or best practices in education innovation; at least two years professional experience involving project management are preferred.
- Prior experience maintaining program quality and vision in a complex and changing environment is preferred.
- This position requires communication, management, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage complex tasks in a dynamic environment is essential.
- Knowledge of and interest in a variety of natural history subjects is preferred.
- Valid PA Drivers License is required. This position requires work outside in inclement weather, including hiking and guiding outdoor programs for hours at a time, crossing cold streams or transporting loads of up to 50 pounds to remote locations.
- Manage the operations of Powdermill’s visitor experiences and learning programs. Responsibilities include directing curriculum development, organizing, maintaining and modifying educational materials as needed, providing program descriptions for marketing, responding to information requests and monitoring presentations performed to ensure that program goals and objectives are achieved.
- Schedule, supervise and motivate program delivery staff who conduct various education programs, working directly with the visitors, in order to assure program quality and excellent customer service. Hire, discipline staff, and make recommendations for raises as necessary and in conjunction with Associate Director, Learning and Community Programs. Evaluate staff performance and manage recruitment and training processes.
- Manage budgeted funds in a fiscally responsible manner to meet budget projects and ensure that they meet the needs of the program areas.
- Assist with collaborative programs and strategic initiatives, including the development and/or implementation of funding proposals and other departmental initiatives.
- Coordinate program implementation with department staff and other CMNH personnel to ensure clear communication and scheduling. In this effort, maintain a professional working relationship with other CMNH departments and across Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
- Support the operations and administrative team at Powdermill Nature Reserve by following established safety, security, custodial and maintenance procedures, including at times being the highest ranking staff on-site to ensure compliance. Work independently to troubleshoot immediate safety, security, custodial and maintenance concerns and promptly report issues to the appropriate PNR operations and administrative staff for assistance.
- Maintain professional growth in natural history content and education. Give and receive constructive criticism with the goal of developing individual skills and the quality of museum educational experiences.
- Any other duties as assigned.
