Public Works Maintenance Supervisor Job at City of West Palm Beach
Under limited direction, supervises subordinate supervisors, team leaders or workers in the maintenance of the City’s streets, sidewalks, and all areas within the right of ways; and performs other related duties as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Which are not in any hierarchical order)
1. Interviews, trains, motivate, assigns and evaluates work, and recommends disciplinary action according to established City procedures. Conducts performance appraisals.
2. Supports and actively promotes the City’s safety programs.
3. Performs regular site inspections or responds to citizen notification of cave-in or roadway depressions to avoid incident or injury.
4. Supervises subordinate supervisors, team leaders or work crews in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, and all areas within the right of ways.
5. Calls in outside contractors when needed and oversees and inspects contract work, as needed.
6. Plans, schedules, selects or approves, and requisitions necessary equipment and related supplies.
7. Oversees all work in progress to ensure quality, timeliness and safety.
8. Schedules preventive maintenance on a regular schedule.
9. Maintains inspection and repair records.
10. Develops, recommends and monitors the operating budget for area of responsibility.
11. Maintains inventory of necessary parts, equipment, and supplies.
12. Investigates and coordinates a response to citizen questions and complaints.
13. Assists or participates in performing maintenance and repair work as necessary.
14. Must be able and willing to perform all duties of positions lower than the one being held.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Salary
Depending on qualifications the starting salary for this position will be in the range of (Pay Grade 59):
$27.72 - $34.66 Hourly

Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (education will be verified using the “Education Requirements” listed below) and five (5) years of experience in maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and all areas within the right of ways, or journeyman level experience in building maintenance, including one (1) year of lead work or supervisory experience are required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Florida Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic certification is required.
A valid Florida driver’s license is required. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within thirty (30) days and obtain a valid Class B Commercial Florida driver’s license within 6 months from date of employment.
Education Requirements: To be considered valid (or verified) for position qualification purposes, and consistent with City Hiring Policy 4-5, a High School, GED or equivalent diploma, and all higher education degrees or certifications must have been issued by:
a) a public education institution in the State of Florida or any State or Territory of the United States; or
b) an institution accredited by an accrediting organization that is recognized by the Florida Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Education; or
c) an institution that is accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); or
d) an institution whose degree or certification is accepted by institutions identified in either a), b), or c), above, for the purpose of admission to institutions identified in either a), b), or c) above.
International degrees will be evaluated to determine if they satisfy qualification requirements.
Special Driving Requirements:
Have not lost any driving privileges by reason of revocation, suspension or denial of license, or have been convicted and/or had an adjudication withheld of three or more moving violations or,
Have not had one DUI (Driving Under the Influence) in any preceding twenty-four (24) month period. License suspension of two weeks or less or suspensions based only on non-moving violations that have been cleared will not automatically result in revocation of driving privileges.
Have not had more than one DUI (conviction or adjudication withheld) in Florida or any other state within the past ten (10) years.

The selection process for this position may consist of any, all or a combination of the following tests: evaluation of training and experience, written examination, structured oral interview or other assessment method.
State of Emergency: When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration by the Mayor that a state of emergency exists, all employees will be deemed critical by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work. Employees deemed critical by the City but not needed for the initial preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail may be directed not to report to work, and given paid administrative leave or they may be reassigned to another location that best meet the needs of the City.
