Position Summary:
Provides services to patients ranging in age from the very young (newborn) to the elderly in order to prevent, alleviate or correct breathing disorders associated with a medical trauma or disease progression. Responsible for treating inpatients and outpatients. Sets up and operates devices such as EKG, cardiac monitors, mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment. Provides emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage, and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to patients of all ages. Determines requirements for treatment, such as type, method, and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians' orders. Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes; consults with physician if adverse reactions occur. Reads prescriptions, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition. Works as part of a team of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to manage patient care. Enforces safety rules and ensures careful adherence to physicians' orders. Maintains charts that contain patients' pertinent identification and therapy information. Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary. Educates patients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Respiratory Therapist 1:
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), or Registry Eligible (RRTE). Good knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Good communication, time management, and organizational skills. Excellent patient care skills. Professional demeanor and ability to multi-task. Ability to retrieve, communicates, or otherwise presents information in a written, auditory or visual fashion. Ability to work with patients on an individual and/or group basis using current technology and treatment techniques consistent with department and hospital policies and procedures. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is by the spoken work. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Knowledge of IHI initiatives.
Registered Respiratory Therapist :
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Good knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Good communication, time management, and organizational skills. Excellent patient care skills. Professional demeanor and ability to multi-task. Ability to retrieve, communicates, or otherwise presents information in a written, auditory or visual fashion. Ability to work with patients on an individual and/or group basis using current technology and treatment techniques consistent with department and hospital policies and procedures. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is by the spoken work. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Knowledge of IHI initiatives. Current NRP; necessary skill and ability to attend C-Sections to provide respiratory services to mothers and newborns.
Senior Registered Respiratory Therapist :
Three (3) years Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Possesses an additional level of certifications that supports the goal of department: Asthma Educator, PFT, NPS. Verification of ACLS or PALS. Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills. Excellent ability to retrieve, communicates, or otherwise presents information in a written, auditory or visual fashion. Proven ability to work with patients on an individual and/or group basis using current technology and treatment techniques consistent with department and hospital policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement specialized treatment programs as appropriate to meet patient needs. Ability to assess patients needs without the assistance of the Manager or Supervisor, ability to address patient concerns with in the parameters of physician’s orders. Comprehensive knowledge of IHI initiatives. Ability to perform invasive procedures. Excellent customer and personal service. Current NRP. Emerging leadership skills preferred. Current NRP; demonstrated expert skill and ability to attend C-Sections to provide respiratory services to mothers and newborns.
Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
- Associate's Degree Respiratory Therapy or completion of an approved educational program for respiratory therapy.
- Current N.C. Respiratory Therapist license
- Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registry Eligible (RRTE)
- Current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), by the National Board of Respiratory Therapy.
- Current BLS
- If registry-eligible, must pass boards and be registered within one (1) year of employment.
