Research Assistant- Ortho Job at The University of Iowa
A Research Assistant is wanted to contribute to the success of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation by assisting with the computational modeling projects related to skeletal deformity and mechanical injury mechanisms. Duties include:
- Work with a team of engineering graduate students, undergraduate students, and orthopedic researchers to create and execute computational models from patient data.
- Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by the team.
- Read and review articles as directed. As individual skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypothesis for discussion with other researchers or principal investigator.
- Read and understand protocols. As individual skills develop, troubleshoot and analyze protocols; propose modifications to other researchers or principal investigator.
- Record and consolidate data as directed by Principal Investigator (PI). Track progress/success of research project.
- Collect, track, and perform data entry for reports. Prepare materials for reports. As skills develop, analyze data.

Researchers in the College's over 280 laboratories are served by state-of-the-art core research facilities and research support facilities. Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering with a focus on mechanics
Required Qualifications:
- 6 months-1 year of Orthopedic research experience (undergrad experience or post-grad experience)
- Experience manipulating 3D models
- Experience with coding such as C++.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to multi-task, organize priorities, and work independently to meet deadlines.
Desired Qualification:
- Work knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Experience working with software applications related to research.
- Evidence of leadership ability.
- Experience in a hospital setting.
- Experience with Matlab software.
