Research Specialist - Neuroscience and Pharmacology Job at The University of Iowa
The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology is seeking a Research Specialist to oversee a transgenic mouse colony and conduct research on the neurocircuitry of addiction, Alzheimer’s disease and psychiatric disorders. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to maintain rodent breeding colonies and keep detailed records, train others in the lab on basic laboratory protocols, set up and conduct experiments, and perform data analysis and interpretation. The ideal candidate will have experience working with transgenic mice, performing survival surgeries and behavioral assays in rodents.
Duties to Include:
- Performed mouse experiments independently. This includes but is not limited to brain sectioning, histology, immunoblotting, survival and non-survival surgery, microscopy, chronic intermittent ethanol administration, EEG/EMG recordings, and behavioral experiments in rodents. Training will be provided
- Assist with maintaining colonies of genetically modified mice; handling, breeding, weaning, identification (ear punching), tail snipping, euthanizing, transferring, and shipping
- Perform extractions of nucleic acids from mouse tissues, genotyping, and assays of gene expression
- Perform routine procedures in the animal models, observe for signs of phenotype, illness, injury, or stress. Collect tissue samples and execute basic medical treatments of the mice, including the administration of drugs
- Work in a barrier, high health status environment with the ability to move between barrier and non-barrier facilities effectively and efficiently, without compromising health status of animals
- Keep detailed inventory of all mouse lines and genetic profile results
- Order and maintain records of drugs/chemical agents and other supplies
- Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment, monitoring lab inventory, arranging service contracts, and interfacing with technicians and vendor
- Assist graduate students and postdocs with experiments

Required Qualifications:
- A Master’s in neuroscience or other biomedical field OR a minimum of 5 years of research experience in neuroscience, pharmacology, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology
- At least 2 years’ experience in a research laboratory.
- Proficiency with a variety of neuroscience techniques such as mouse handling and restraint, stereotaxic surgeries, behavioral assays, histology, transcardial perfusions, stereology, and confocal imaging.
- Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work autonomously, problem solve and effectively manage own time/workload to meet project deliverables with minimal oversight
