A research technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Deanna Arble in the Department of Biological Sciences at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. The Arble lab investigates obesity, glucose metabolism, circadian rhythms, and the central control of breathing using preclinical mouse models. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the lab and mouse colony in addition to performing scientific experiments using behavioral and molecular techniques. Duties and Responsibilities
The research technician will be responsible for the lab’s general organization (including record keeping, supply ordering, maintaining equipment), overseeing a transgenic mouse colony, and coordinating with lab members to assist them with experiments. Daily responsibilities may include any of the following: conducting all aspects of genotyping, behavioral and physiological assays (including glucose tolerance tests, and the collection of ventilatory measures in mice), small-animal surgery, tissue collection and preparation, routine gene and protein assays, and various molecular procedures. The ideal candidate should be able to interpret data, trouble-shoot technical problems, and keep accurate records of all experiments. In addition, duties include attending weekly lab meetings and training and supervising new lab members. The flexibility to perform occasional evening or weekend work is expected.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or high school education (some college preferred) with 1-2 years of related lab experience. Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary. Successful candidate will be expected to exhibit individual initiative, work independently; be technically proficient and accurate; effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations; initiate and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures; and possess attention to detail.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 1-2 years research experience in animal physiology, biology, neuroscience, or related discipline. The highly successful candidate will have some prior knowledge of animal behavior, glucose physiology, molecular biology, anatomy, and small-animal husbandry. Preferred research experience includes familiarity with mouse animal handling, glucose tolerance tests, small-animal surgeries, and standard laboratory techniques including perfusion, cryostat/vibrotome tissue collection, qRT-PCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. The successful candidate should be willing to commit to at least 1 year in this position if hired.
