Restaurant Service - local business in NewBo Market Job at The Full Bowl
Who we are / I am:
The Full Bowl is a small restaurant - one of about a dozen located within NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids. We specialize in vegetarian/vegan cuisine, serving primarily rice bowls with emphasis on highlighting cuisine from all over the world. I (Tim) usually operate the restaurant by myself. I worked part-time for the previous owner, moving into managing the restaurant full time, and have recently taken over ownership of the restaurant. I am looking to expand our staff and our menu offerings over the next year.
We are open the following hours:
Thursday and Friday 10am - 8pm
Saturday: 10am - 6pm
Sunday: 10am - 4pm
Plus other hours for special events
What I am looking for:
Previous restaurant experience is always a bonus, but I am happy to train anyone who would be a good fit for the restaurant! I am looking for someone comfortable working in a customer-facing kitchen, who can go back-and-forth between preparing food and serving customers.
I am happy to work with your schedule if you have any other employment, education, childcare commitments, or anything else in your schedule. I certainly don’t expect you to have availability for all the hours that the restaurant is open for a part-time position. I don’t have a set schedule of hours that I am looking to fill, so what hours you work really are pretty flexible for me.
The most important skills I am looking for are:
-Positive and informative customer service: making everyone feel welcome, and also being as knowledgeable about our food as possible and answering customer questions. Your personal dietary choices aren’t relevant to your success here, but since our menu is entirely vegetarian/vegan, being able to present that aspect of our menu in a positive light is a must.
-Ability to work independently: While I will be working with you as long as needed for training, I am looking for someone who can work independently (and give me some time off!). Except for training, exceptionally busy days, or occasional overlap, you will be working independently the majority of the time.
-Ability to problem solve and adapt: Especially since the majority of your work will be done independently (once you are comfortable being at that point), you will need to be able to make decisions based on customer flow to ensure that we are properly stocked and have food to serve. When the restaurant is busy, this will require prioritizing tasks to ensure that we don’t run out of things.
-Strong communication skills/ability to apply feedback: This restaurant is incredibly important to me. While I will do my very best to give feedback in a way that is not overly critical, I do need someone who understands that offering consistency to customers is vital for the success of the restaurant, so I may be a bit picky about certain things. That being said, I really want to create an environment where you feel the liberty to make suggestions, and come up with ideas to do things differently. The more we communicate, the more smoothly things will run.
What I can offer you:
-Flexibility of hours: while I can’t offer full-time work at this point, I do want to be able to tailor this position to your needs in whatever way I can. If it works best for you to have a shift or two that you work consistently every week or if you want to keep things more fluid, either option works for me.
-Competitive restaurant pay: this is a position where you have the opportunity to earn a significant amount of tips. Base pay begins at $13/hr and will increase to $14/hr as soon as we both feel comfortable to have you begin working shifts on your own. Depending on which shifts you work, your hourly pay should frequently exceed $20/hr.
-Independence: while I want to set you up for success, and avoid a situation where you feel unsupported, this is a position that will allow you to have some level of control over work flow and - as you get more comfortable in the position - the ability to be creative and bring new things to the restaurant.
-A positive work environment: NewBo City Market can be a really great place to work. Customers are generally more friendly and excited to support small businesses, so it is a great place to set up more positive customer interactions than some other restaurant environments. Other market shopkeepers typically offer discounts to other employees within the market, and there is a good feeling of comradery between businesses.
I don’t need a super formal application. You can just attach a letter detailing your interest, expressing what you bring to the table, and any questions you have. Feel free to add a resume or work experience/references if you feel that it would be helpful or relevant.
