Restoration/Forestry Crew - Seasonal Job at Wheaton Park District

GENERAL PURPOSE
Responsible for assisting with the implementation of restoration projects, park maintenance and natural resources planning at the park district.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum eighteen (18) years of age. Experience, knowledge, and skills in the restoration of natural areas, native plant taxonomy, operation of field equipment and machinery, and preparation of biological reports required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Attendance at work site as scheduled; must be available to work other shifts and overtime as required. Must be available to be reassigned to another division if needed.
- Coordinate and implement ecological restoration activities in natural areas.
- Assist in the development and production of natural areas restoration plans for the district.
- Assist with tree removal and invasive species as designated by conservation manager
- Assist with the district’s prescribed burning program.
- Operate and maintain machinery including chainsaws, tractors, trimmers, chippers, etc.
- Assist with the development of reports, plans, and recommendations as assigned.
- Assist with the Canada goose depredation program.
- Assist with wildlife management practices as assigned, such as maintenance of nest boxes, and trapping of nuisance species.
- Assist with aquatic resource monitoring and restoration.
- Install, monitor and maintain a variety of planting projects and materials.
- Install, inspect and maintain equipment, facilities and trails.
- Collect and install native seed and plant materials for restoration projects.
- Maintain an organized workshop and safe working conditions.
- May be required to work special events.
- Operate tractor, utility truck, hand tools, power tools and other machinery as deemed necessary.
- Wear personal protective equipment for job function when needed.
- Maintain effective two-way communication while dealing with concerns in the field with all district staff and immediate supervisor.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.
Must have and maintain: valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: continuously walk/move and position one’s self to perform maintenance; occasionally climb stairs/ladder, repetitive use of hands/arms, vibration and grasping while working with tools and equipment, and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs, and over with assistance, eye/hand coordination, and fine manipulation; occasionally walk on uneven ground. Must be able to drive a one ton dump truck with a trailer or chipper attached.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: handle all weather conditions while traveling between facilities, frequently encounter rain, snow, insects, dirt, poisonous plants, grease, oil, mud; occasional confined spaces, heights over 12 feet, fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, animal hair, dander, feces, noise over 85 dbls, wet, slippery floors and surfaces, and work while standing in 2-3 feet of water or in a boat; rarely encounter pesticides, chemicals and smoke.

Monday - Friday 6:00am - 2:00pm
40 hours per week
SALARY
$14.00 - $16.00 per hour DOQ
