General Responsibilities:

The staff pharmacist is the patient advocate and serves as a resource to advise prescribers for the best available pharmaceutical products or services for his/her patient. The staff pharmacist proactively assures that the patients’ prescriptions are filled accurately and timely, and that the customer/facility staff is counseled appropriately with all pertinent information on the use of medications. The staff pharmacist also serves as a direct and accessible resource to the pharmacy technicians they supervise in day-to-day workflow. They are readily available and willing to support the Pharmacist in Charge in any capacity they are asked. The staff pharmacist ensures all federal, state, and local laws are being followed as well as company policies and procedures regarding all pharmacy operations. They are the liaison between pharmacy technicians/other pharmacy staff and the Pharmacist in Charge, regarding day-to-day workflow communication.

Workflow Responsibilities:

  • Verifies proper storage and handling of all medications, including storage units (refrigerators/freezers) and ambient temperature monitoring
  • Ensures accuracy of prescription data entry and makes corrections as warranted
  • Ensures timely and accurate prescription filling performed by pharmacy technicians
  • Verifies purchasing is completed daily and inventory remains at an acceptable level, as defined by company standards
  • Ensures necessary legal documentation during all steps of filling prescriptions to meet legal requirements and reduce audit risk
  • Ensures all workflow areas have appropriate coverage on a day-to-day basis in coordination with the Pharmacist in Charge
  • Ensures proper opening and closing of facility
  • Ensures the delivery of the Inspection Binder to Inspector immediately upon request and helps aid in an inspection when PIC is not present
  • Is familiar with pharmacy record storage and can readily retrieve pharmacy records promptly when requested to do so
  • Maintains adequate knowledge and participates in clinical services when appropriate

Tactical Work:

  • Communicates with nurses, physicians, and other medical personnel as required in daily pharmacy operations
  • Works with Pharmacist in Charge and Senior Technicians to ensure proper workflow staffing in response to unexpected staffing shortages (sick coverage, weather events, employee emergencies, etc.) and lunch coverage
  • Be the facility’s/patient’s trusted health care advocate
  • Recommends alternative pharmaceutical therapy when appropriate to prescribers and patients
  • Identifies therapy opportunities that are both beneficial to the patient and the pharmacy while in workflow
  • Communicates therapy changes to both prescribers and patients and follows through on such requests
  • Ensures prescription accuracy at every step in the workflow process
  • Performs final check on all prescriptions and performs prescription DUR processes for each prescription fill/refill
  • Maintains awareness of prescription margins at the verification step for every prescription, and takes necessary steps to mitigate negative prescription margins
  • Counsels nurses/patients on the appropriate use of medications using available drug references
  • Teaches nurses/facility staff on the appropriate use of medical devices that deal with accurate medication delivery/administration
  • Follows federal, state, and local laws, as well as pharmacy policies and procedures regarding controlled substances
  • Assures that all pharmacy operations are conducted safely and according to pharmacy law
  • Conducts CMRs and TIPs as identified in Outcomes/MTM
  • Conducts clinical services (such as immunization clinics) as at facility request in coordination with the PIC and other staff pharmacists
  • Becomes trained to give immunizations and follow pharmacy procedure to give immunizations
  • Maintains individual immunization requirement folder and required immunization documentation
  • Becomes proficient in and follows current MTM practices performed in the pharmacy
  • Ensures the proper opening and secure closing of facilities, verifies daily reports, and daily computer backup performed
  • Maintains knowledge of prescription compounding and durable medical equipment
  • Provides input and assistance to any and all members of the organization toward the achievement of stated pharmacy goals
  • Assists Senior Technicians in the resolution of any hardware or software issues or forwards concerns to PIC/IT Specialist
  • Identifies training gaps and relays them to the Pharmacist in Charge in a constructive manner for improvement of the pharmacy team
  • Fosters an environment of team success and positivity
  • Handles customer service requests outside normal business hours as required and ensures patient/facility needs are met
  • Is responsible for finding individual shift coverage for planned work absences outside of approved vacation time
  • Identifies and corrects billing errors in day-to-day workflow
  • Performs other duties at the request of the Pharmacist in Charge
  • Participates in community events such as vaccination events and community fairs when applicable
  • Adapts to the ever-changing demands of pharmacy as a profession and willing to adapt roles/responsibilities as requested by supervisor(s)
