Job Summary:
Public Safety Technicians (PST) are uniformed, non-sworn employees of the Police Department that assist the department in duties that support the community. The position requires working four, 10-hour shifts (with three days off); working either a day or evening shift; and being available to work weekends and holidays. Shift: 7:00-5:00, M-F, with the need to change hours based on special events.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior law enforcement experience preferred
- Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a good driving record
- One to three years recent demonstrated experience working with the public especially in difficult situations
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
- Spanish/English bilingual speaking skills highly desired
- Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of City systems
- Knowledge of law enforcement software
- Knowledge of tactical equipment
- Understanding of computer aided dispatch system and department phone tree
Essential Functions:
- Communicate to external and internal customers. Communicate verbally and written.
- Duties include assisting citizens, investigating incidents such as lost/found property, non-injury traffic accidents, and misdemeanor thefts.
- Manage the front desk and serve as the initial point of contact for walk in and phone customers of the Greeley Police Department. Handle police service calls that don’t require a police officer and route citizens to the appropriate person within the police headquarters building.
- Manage community outreach programs to include Neighborhood Watch, Nextdoor and National Night Out.
- Complete Safe2Tell dispositions.
- Participate in department-sponsored community events.
- Complete background investigations on prospective employees.
- Perform Animal Control functions and other tasks such as traffic control when directed to do so by a police supervisor
- Give community presentations, organize station tours and assist with recruiting events
- Communication: Frequent contact with officers of the Neighborhood Action Team and those in special operations. Frequent contact with Greeley citizens about neighborhood problems, events and programs. Maintain regular communication to provide updates as to current projects and seek guidance when confronted with situations where the answer is not clearly apparent.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (e.g., operate a motor vehicle)
- Communication skills enough to convey information verbally and in writing
- Perform physical tasks necessary to apprehend loose animals
- Must be able to hear and speak on the radio and telephone
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds.
- Dangerous to considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury
- Frequent contact with the public in normal or adverse conditions
- Work schedule includes evenings, shifts, holidays and weekends
- Exposure to all weather conditions
