School Age Child Care 1:1 Counselor Job at YMCA of the Pines
Job Title: School Age Child Care 1:1 Counselor, age 18+
FLSA Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Site Supervisor and School’s Out Director
Dates: Immediate Start – approx. June 14, 2023
Location: Upper Pittsgrove School, Monroeville, NJ
POSITION SUMMARY:
The School Age Child Care 1:1 Counselor will be responsible for supporting the social and emotional needs of a pre-K student with special needs. The counselor will support the student in the before- and after-school program and provide support and guidance to allow the child to be successful in completing art projects, participating in group play, and exploring solitary activities. The counselor will be responsible for following the provisions of the student’s individualized education plan (IEP) and also for supporting the other staff and students within the program. The counselor will be required to work both indoors and outside and may need to structure independent activities along with a second staff member. The counselor should feel confident and comfortable supporting a student in times of emotional distress. Training will be provided in best practices.
SCHEDULE AND LOCATION:
· Counselors are generally expected to work Monday – Friday, morning shifts from 6:50 AM – approx 8:45 AM AND/OR 3:00 – approx. 6:00 PM, with an immediate start date. The employment agreement will conclude on the last day of the school year in June. Opportunities are available for summer employment at additional locations.
· Preference is given to candidates who are available for both the AM and PM shifts.
· Approximately 5 times a year, afternoon shifts will start 2 hours early.
· 12 + hours of online paid training is required, including CPR and Frist Aid
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Assist in providing and participating in all activities while ensuring the delivery of a quality program.
· Provide social and emotional support for inidivudal student.
· Responsible for assisting the Site Supervisor in: greeting children and parents; assuring proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; cleaning and storage of equipment and supplies in the program area.
· Attend staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training per State requirements.
· Cultivate positive relationships and maintain effective communication with parents, children, and other staff members.
· Adhere to program and state licensing standards, including safety and cleanliness standards
· Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. At least 18 years of age
2. Ability to clear state-mandated background checks, including fingerprinting and CARI (child abuse records) check.
3. Knowledge in the supervision and safety of children
4. Possess leadership skills and can assist in encouraging and motivating children in a before- and after-school setting
5. Able to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, and parents/guardians.
6. CPR, First Aid, AED Certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training completed within 60 days of hire.
7. Ability to lead in one or more of the following areas: sports, games, academics, crafts
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Ability to work before- and after-school hours, as well as early dismissals.
2. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel & bend (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
3. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
4. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
5. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
6. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

I understand that I am being hired for the School’s Out program as whole, and not for any one specific location. I understand and agree that my specific school assignment may change based upon the needs of the program. I understand that this is a ten month position, beginning with training in the end of August and concluding when the elementary school finishes in June. I understand that should I wish to work in the program for successive years, I will need to reapply each year.
