Elementary Principal Job Description

Would you like the opportunity to lead a highly recognized school that offers an inquiry-based child-centered education? The Cutler Jewish Day School (CJDS) is in search of an elementary principal to partner in the education and nurturing of our students, families, and faculty. The principal will guide our community school (which is open to families of all faiths). Established in 1992, CJDS enrolls nearly 165 students, from birth through fifth grade under the guidance and instruction of 50 faculty and staff members. The elementary school contains 61 children and 10 teachers.

CJDS is accredited by the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA), the National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the Program for Infant and Toddler Care (PITC). Reporting directly to the Head of School, the principal is responsible for establishing and operating all aspects of the elementary school while embracing the school and its core mission and values.

The position will include responsibilities in the following areas:

General Educational Leader

  • To act as the educational leader facilitating a nurturing environment for children and families in which inquiry learning takes place.
  • To be aware of the educational, physical, social, cultural, and psychological needs of the members of the school community and to develop plans for meeting these needs.
  • To help facilitate the unique Jewish mission of the school. The principal does not need to be Jewish.

Faculty Leadership

  • To observe, supervise, and evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of an inquiry-based curriculum; to supervise the teaching process, and to review and evaluate the emotional climate and academic programs.
  • To establish programs for the orientation of new elementary teachers, for in-service training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers, to ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation.
  • To serve as a consultant to elementary teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures.
  • To conduct regular meetings with elementary staff which will deal both with routine school matters and with the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern.
  • To provide for the academic guidance of students; to maintain complete academic and attendance records on all students; to oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement.
  • To oversee the after-school program and staff insuring the high-quality care of each child.

Family Leadership

  • Actively advocate for and engage with each elementary family to create a nurturing family environment where each family’s needs are valued and met.
  • Meet with elementary families to partner in any issues of dissatisfaction with the school.
  • Strengthen teacher and staff capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds and with community members that support student achievement and student well-being.

Managerial Leadership

  • Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the elementary school including each of the four pillars emphasizing the tenets and practices of Judaism.
  • To lead in the articulation of the school mission, school goals, materials, methods and means of assessment.
  • To help ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and agencies.
  • To lead the hiring and retention, and the assignment of faculty.
  • To strive for unity, harmony, and cooperation through tact, helpfulness, respect, and a recognition of individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each teacher.

Other Leadership

  • To oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school; to assist in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs; to assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events; to keep the entire school community informed of various school programs and activities.
  • To help prepare a master school class schedule and to assign teachers and students to classes and other obligations.
  • To help in the recruitment of students including new initiatives.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Salary and compensation will be commensurate with experience and credentials. Candidate should provide a resume and a written statement of his/her personal philosophy of education.
