Under supervision of the Newborn Screening (NBS) Program Manager, employee serves as a case coordinator for the NBS Program for infants with abnormal screening results for genetic and metabolic disorders. Disorder areas include endocrine, hemoglobin, metabolic, and lysosomal disorders, and others as assigned. In this role, the selected candidate:
- Notifies hospitals, physician offices, and/or appropriate medical staff concerning infants with abnormal NBS lab results. Collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure linkage to care for infants identified with potential NBS disorders. Establishes and maintains accurate and complete patient case files.
- Provides guidance and technical assistance to hospitals, physician offices, and health department staff regarding NBS procedures.
- Joins forces with other NBS, IT, and PMO staff to develop and implement an electronic patient case management system. Works with all stakeholders on issues related to current and expanded NBS testing. Acquires and maintains competency in new NBS IT system.
- Collaborates with the SC Public Health Lab and related Bureau of Maternal & Child Health (MCH) staff to develop and implement QI activities and marketing materials (ex. trainings, newsletters, and reports) for the NBS Program. Teams up with APHL and related NBS program staff to populate APHL data repository by keying and/or importing select patient data.
- Participates in pertinent meetings and trainings, and performs other duties as assigned.
- Appointee also serves in a mandatory rotation to provide select Saturday, holiday, and/or emergency coverage as required. Limited in-state/out-of-state and/or overnight travel for meetings and trainings may be required.
State Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Agency Additional Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare science with at least one (1) year of experience working with common conditions included on the newborn screening panel. Registered Nurse (RN), certified Medical Scientist (MT/MLS), Registered Dietitian (RDN/LD), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) or MPH required.
