Important Update (5/11/2023): The incentive plan (see below) began September 21, 2022 and ends June 30, 2023. New hire incentives will only be approved for individuals that begin employment before July 1, 2023.
This position may be eligible for a $3250 hiring incentive. Individuals selected for positions in Buena Vista, Canon City, Limon and Sterling will receive an additional $2500 for a total of $5750.
New Hire Incentive guidelines are as follows:
1. New hire must successfully complete the probationary period, staying one year
2. If new hire leaves the department prior to one year, incentive shall be paid back/collected at the time of final payout
3. Not applicable to employee promotions
4. Paid out at three months and six months of service
Note: CDOC staff members who left the department after 9/21/2022, will not be eligible for the new hire incentive if they choose to return.
New Employee relocation Incentive:

$5000 available to the first 50 new Correctional Officers or Clinical Professionals, working in a 24/7 facility, relocating from Weld County or out of state, hired for positions in Buena Vista or Canon City and relocating to Chaffee or Fremont county.

Available after one month of service; must be repaid if the employee leaves before one year.

This position provides leadership and vision for the Mental Health clinical program or work unit. The position will provide Mental Health services to inmates as well as consultation and guidance to correctional staff and administrators about mental health needs and issues.
Position is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
- Responsible for maintaining the standard of care for the clinical program;
- Responsible for day-to-day mental health operations of assigned unit;
- Responsible for the interface between the mental health clinical program or unit and Clinical Services administration, other CDOC departments, other facilities, and outside agencies;
- Investigate, interview, and synthesize information pertaining to conflict resolution, resolving offender grievances;
- Maintain a comprehensive offender mental health record;
- Act as a consultant and provide training to facility, community, and state service providers on issues related to treating incarcerated offenders diagnosed with mental illness or other special needs as identified;
- Provide the full range of professional psychological services to offenders housed in the Colorado Department of Corrections, to include formal and informal mental health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, psychological testing, and clinical interviewing;
- Assure accurate and Information System mental health needs levels, including Psychiatric and Developmental Disability levels;
- Provide group, brief, and individual therapy, and crisis intervention;
- Assure both emergency and non-emergency transfer for offenders experiencing acute mental health needs;
- Provide clinical direction to non-clinical staff regarding mental health care and treatment of offenders;
- Oversight of formal assessments and diagnostic treatment;
- Assure continuity of care for offenders;
- Implement action to maximize the quality of patient care delivered within the assigned work unit;
- Responsible for the Mental Health components of accreditation;
- Formulate and implement policies and procedures essential to promoting quality care;
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicant must possess current, valid licensure as a Psychologist from the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners.
- Applicant must have three years of experience as licensed psychologist or permitted psychologist candidate, two of which must have been at the level of a fully operating psychologist.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience with psychological testing, assessment and report writing;
- Experience providing clinical supervision of post-doctoral psychologists.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Maintain required licensure/credentials;
- Advanced knowledge and a thorough understanding of mental health care standards and guidelines;
- Ability to work directly with offenders to provide the full range of professional psychological services;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively internally and externally regarding mental health programs.

- Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
- Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;
- Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
- Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
- Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
- Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
- Swing a baton in a striking technique;
- Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
- Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
- Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
- Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
- Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
- Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
- Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
- Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
- Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed inmates;
- Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
- Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
- Willing and able to travel;
- Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
- TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana. Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.
