We have an immediate opportunity for a Senior Social Scientist and Project Manager to support our energy and natural resource practices. For decades, our energy practice has supported a broad range of renewable energy technologies, conventional generation, electric transmission, hydroelectric, and emerging technologies such as energy storage or smart grids. This position will be located in the Tetra Tech Bothell, WA office.


The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience serving as a project manager for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and state-level environmental permitting projects, with a technical specialization in economic and social impact analysis. The ideal applicant will have experience managing and conducting economic and social analyses for large scale environmental impact projects throughout the western United States. Experience conducting economic and fiscal impact analyses for energy development projects is required. Experience serving as task or technical lead for other social science disciplines such as environmental justice, land use, recreation, and scenery is also desired.


The Senior Social Scientist will have the ability and experience to support complex projects in a dynamic work environment, have strong critical thinking capabilities, and have a flexible approach to problem solving. Excellent interpersonal communication (oral and written), planning, and organizational skills are required. This position requires a team-oriented professional with a strong attention to detail, and a proven commitment to quality management and client satisfaction. The Senior Social Scientist should also have excellent communication skills as the position requires frequent and effective interaction with clients, regulatory agencies, other team members and the public. Some travel associated with site visits, client or regulatory meetings expected, including participation in public meetings and hearings.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in economics, land use planning, geography, or similar discipline.
  • 10 years or more years of relevant experience, including experience permitting renewable and other energy development projects.
  • Project management experience, such as managing people, clients, scopes of work, budgets, and contract deliverables.
  • Experience working with NEPA and land management and other federal agencies, such as the USDA Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Department of Energy, and Bonneville Power Administration.
  • Experience working with state energy siting and permitting processes, such as the Washington Energy Facility Siting Evaluation Council (EFSEC), Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC), California Energy Commission (CEC), and Wyoming Industrial Siting Council (ISC).
  • Demonstrated experience preparing economic impact studies using IMPLAN, RIMS II, or other input-output tools. Experience preparing standalone economic and fiscal impact studies for use in community outreach and permitting processes.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, oral communication, and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work independently and to communicate clearly and work closely with team members located across other offices.
  • Applied experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are necessary to perform the responsibilities of this position.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state law.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience.

Salary Range: $130,000 - $150,000 yr.
