POSITION SUMMARY & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sr. Vice President & Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the senior leadership team and serves as a trusted advisor and partner to the President & CEO. The SVP & COO will ensure effective management and oversight of the organization’s business operations, programs, and finances, while developing innovative programs to engage new audiences, identify new revenue opportunities, and ensure a healthy bottom line sustainable and vibrant future.

Role Expectations:

  • Partners with the President & CEO to build on American Humane’s rich legacy while continuing to grow a world class, industry leading organization that ensures the safety, welfare, and well-being of animals.
  • Drives organizational growth by spearheading the development, communication and implementation of effective revenue generation strategies, programmatic development, and profitability.
  • Promotes American Humane’s brand, and elevates visibility, and influence within communities across the world through partnerships with myriad stakeholders including business leaders, media, government, among others.

Responsibilities:

  • Partners with CFO to assure the sustainable resources to fuel important programs for the future and enhance the long-term, financial health of the organization, including building reserves for key investments.
  • Works with Chief Development Officer to build a comprehensive development strategy for the organization, nurturing current and uncovering new revenue opportunities and implements plans and programs that maximize the organization’s short- and long-term financial well-being.
  • Works with Chief Development Officer to cultivate existing and new relationships with donors and partners. Actively drives American Humane’s long-term financial growth and stability by securing funding from a diversity of sources.
  • Fosters a culture that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion where the team is inspired to do their best work every day to advance the mission of the organization and create positive outcomes aligned with the mission of American Humane.
  • Sets a clear vision for goals and expectations, while encouraging an atmosphere that promotes accountability, collaboration, empowerment, and creativity.
  • Leverages performance management processes for consistently evaluating and developing staff on an annual basis to ensure accountability, results, and growth.
  • Builds partnerships and works collaboratively with team members across the organization to meet shared objectives. Works closely with program heads and other relevant department leadership around budget development and implementation, maintaining a high level of fiscal responsibility for all programs; strategic staff planning; and external relationship development and fundraising efforts.
  • Stays abreast of industry trends to ensure programs stay aligned with the dynamic shifts impacting members and non-members alike. Conducts regular program evaluation to ensure effectiveness and develops and implements best-in-class events, certifications, educational offerings, and services.
  • Creates a compelling marketing agenda that elevates the mission and impact of American Humane and attracts, engages, and sustains involvement of funders, partners, and other key external stakeholders.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 10 years of executive-level leadership experience in an organization of similar scale and complexity.
  • Passion for promoting the welfare and safety of animals and strengthening the bond between animals and humans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Empathy for individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Exceptional influence, sales, marketing and relationship building skills, key to forging strong relationships and enhancing engagement with donors, members, and other strategic partners.
  • Business and financial acumen, essential for ensuring the fiscal and organizational health of American Humane.
  • Experienced staff leader, with demonstrated record for attracting and developing strong, diverse talent and building and managing a high-performing team in a results-oriented fast-paced environment. An ability to manage in a hybrid work environment with team in remote locations.
  • A proactive, goal-oriented leadership style, with a track record for instilling accountability.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to innovate and seize opportunities to improve program effectiveness and organizational outcomes.
  • Outstanding communications and listening skills- both written and verbal, with the ability to serve as a passionate spokesperson before the media, government officials, business partners, and members.

Direct Reports:

  • National/Global Directors of all program areas, including Hollywood, Farm Program, Rescue, Conservation, Pet Provider, and Lois Pope LIFE Center for Military Affairs, Chief Veterinary Officer, and Administrative Assistant.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • American Humane’s National Headquarters in Washington, DC – but relocation will not be mandatory for candidates on the east coast.
  • For remote employees, must be willing to commit to 1 week per month in DC office.
  • Long hours are likely and may include some evening and weekend work,
  • Position operates in a hybrid and remote environment.
  • Must be o.k. with occasional animals in the office.
  • Travel required; approximately 40% both domestically and globally.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, marketing, program evaluation, public administration or related field strongly preferred.
