Shelver-Part Time Job at Frederick County Government
POSITION DETAILS:
Non-exempt; part-time; varied workdays and hours during FCPL operating schedule; approximately 8-11.5 hours per week; year-round position; subject to system-wide reassignment; no benefits
Positions available at the following locations:
- C. Burr Artz Public Library
- Urbana Regional Library
- Walkersville Library
- Brunswick Branch Library
- Northern County Branches (Thurmont Regional Library and Emmitsburg Branch Library)
This position is responsible for sorting, shelving and retrieving library materials, and for assisting with maintaining the orderliness of the assigned library. While performing duties in public areas, this position must demonstrate courteous customer relations skills. Supervision is received from the Branch Administrator or Shelving Supervisor.
- Sort and shelve library materials; verify correct order and placement
- Provide effective internal and external customer service
- Empty the book drop
- Retrieve items that are placed on hold
- Operate all functions of DVD dispenser, including loading and retrieving items
- Remove search list materials and shift collection, as needed
- Maintain orderliness in library collection
- Assist with clerical duties in other departments, (i.e. check in books, scan and delete items, check item circulation records)
- Respond to customer's questions regarding the location of materials and other basic service needs, and direct customers to appropriate staff, as needed
- Perform other related duties as required

Minimum age 16 years (due to the required working schedule)- Tenth grade education completed
- Basic skill in the use of computers and technology
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Strong and effective written/spoken (English) communication skills
- Effective clerical skills including demonstrated ability to work with alphabetical and numerical systems including decimals
- Ability to accurately follow written/verbal directions and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision
- Strong internal and external customer service ability including ability to exhibit patience, tact, and courtesy working collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to effectively access and utilitize FCPL's computerized systems
- Ability to effectively organize work and multi-task with attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to new tasks or changes in assignments or procedures
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
- Minimum 60 hours of position related work or volunteer experience in a Library or educational setting
- Minimum 3 months of work or volunteer experience in a public service environment directly working/interacting with the public
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
- While in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk, stoop, lift up to 20 pounds, push up to 40 pounds, reach and perform repetitive motions; is frequently sitting; and is occasionally climbing
- While in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors
- Available for varied workdays and hours within the FCPL operating schedule
