Sr. Research Associate, Process Development Job at Moderna Therapeutics
The Role:
Moderna is seeking a highly skilled and motivated process development scientist to join a collaborative and cross-disciplinary team within Technical Development. In this unique role, the applicant will perform experiments that elucidate the fundamental principles of mRNA lipid nanoparticle (mRNA LNP) assembly. The candidate will participate in both independent and collaborative projects within the LNP Process Science team. The candidate will assist in basic nanoparticle characterization activities and will manage more complex characterization efforts in collaboration with our analytical partners. In addition to their primary scope of responsibilities, the incumbent may further participate in scale-up experiments and technology transfer activities to enable clinical supply and late-stage development efforts.
We seek applicants that are proactive, enthusiastic, and show a passion for formulation science and process development. Applicants should enjoy working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Applicants should have exceptional time management and communications skills with a strong attention to detail. Previous experience with self-assembly, nanoparticle formulations, nanoparticle characterization tools, process characterization, quality-by-design, and statistical design of experiments (DOE) is preferred. We are seeking candidates with strengths in experimental planning, experiment execution, and scientific communication (i.e., technical writing and scientific presentations).
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Design and execute experiments that elucidate the fundamental drivers of mRNA lipid nanoparticle synthesis and stabilization.
Identify opportunities for process innovation and improvement.
Evaluate and scale existing and novel process modes.
Characterize nanoparticle physicochemical properties by managing collaborative efforts with Analytical partners.
Analyze, interpret, and document experimental data. Communicate outcomes to the Technical Development team and stakeholders.
Collect and share relevant academic literature and establish new collaborations with internal groups.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
BS or MS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering or closely related field.
BS with 1-3 years or MS with 0-2 years relevant industry experience.
Ability to thrive in a diverse and fast paced environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred: Experience with self-assembly and antisolvent precipitation reactions.
Preferred: Experience with lipid nanoparticle formulations.
Experience with analytics and biophysical characterization of nanoparticles.
Preferred qualifications: hands-on experience with dynamic light scattering, nanoparticle tracking analysis, nanoparticle separation technologies (AF4, SEC), and spectrophotometric techniques.
Preferred: Hands-on experience with pump operations, micro/macromixing technologies, tangential flow filtration (TFF), dialysis purification, and dead-end filtration approaches.
Preferred: Familiarity with nucleic acid, protein, and/or lipid chemistry, and analytical characterization of biomolecules.
Preferred: Working knowledge of statistical design of experiments (DoE), analysis of multivariate data and JMP statistical software .
