The Nursing VA Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP) designed to attract outstanding US citizen students who have completed the final semester/quarter of the junior year from an accredited baccalaureate nursing program approved by one of the following accredited bodies: Accredited Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The VA-STEP participant is a student nurse who delivers safe care to assigned clients while developing the technical competencies required for the assigned area under the direct supervision of a BSN- RN preceptor and coordination of the on-site VA-STEP Coordinator. The practice of each VA-STEP student is based on skill, experience, evidence and research and has a direct and indirect impact on client outcomes and the facility. VA-STEP students develop clinical competencies in nursing specialty areas such as the Ambulatory Care Clinic, Medical/Surgical/Telemetry, Mental Health, Rehabilitation and Outpatient Surgical Service. Along with one to one preceptor-ship at the bedside, the learning opportunities are enhanced by didactic course work, structured clinical experiences including competency-based clinical practice, and clinical conferences.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works with the preceptor's assignment of care for the day; does not carry an independent patient care load.
  • Reassesses each patient in his/her care for any changes in health and/or care status necessitating a change in the plan of care.
  • Develops a plan of care to reflect professional standards of care and nursing practice, which is congruent with medical plan of care, the patient's needs, and population specific care.
  • Under Preceptor supervision the student gives direct care to assigned patients including procedures.
  • Under direct supervision, administers oral, topical, rectal, parenteral medications, & IV solutions.-Resolves patient care problems and evaluates care given to assigned patients.
  • Reassesses nursing actions for effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes and communicates changes in patients progress note and to preceptor.
Additional VA-STEP Information:
  • This position is intermittent and temporary, not to exceed 400 hours with a possibility of additional funding of 400 hours with scholarship program pre-approval and funding.
  • Students will be paid at a salary rate equal to 80 percent of the local VA facility's annual salary rate for a Nurse I, Level 1, Step 1 (at the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System, this will be 80% of $143,091)
  • No future obligations to the VA or guarantees from the VA will be incurred as a result of participating in this program.

  • Must be currently enrolled in a traditional Baccalaureate nursing (BSN) program at one of VA Palo Alto affiliated schools (San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, CA State East Bay University, and or Samuel Merritt- not the accelerated program).
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time nursing BSN student at San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, CA State East Bay University, and or Samuel Merritt- not the accelerated program).
  • Plan to graduate from a traditional Baccalaureate nursing program (BSN) approved by the appropriate state-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies: Accredited Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time nursing student in a traditional BSN program at one of our five affiliated schools (San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco, CA State University East Bay, and or Samuel Merritt- not the accelerated program).
  • Have completed the final semester or quarter of the junior year in a "Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)" or a "Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)" accredited baccalaureate nursing program by June 2023, with anticipated graduation date by June 2024 or sooner.
  • Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, with no grades lower than a "C" in any nursing course. The cumulative GPA for the nursing core courses may not be less than a 3.0.
  • Submit a letter of nomination to the VA-STEP from the Dean, the Director or Faculty Advisor of your nursing program that verifies completion of your junior year by June of 2023, full-time status, and anticipation graduation of June 2024 or sooner.
  • Be free of any service obligation to any federal, state or private institution, or be a recipient of any Federal scholarships that incurs a service obligation.
  • If selected: must meet physical examination standards including designated and/or random drug testing; must submit to background and/or security investigation; must be proficient in written and spoke English, must meet Selective Service Registration requirement for males born after 12/31/1959 and must attend VA employee orientation.
Preferred Criteria:
  • Applicants must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8 hours - intermittently; repeated bending; both legs required; ability for rapid mental& muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
