Job Description


New River Community College (NRCC) is a comprehensive community college located in the New River Valley of Virginia. At NRCC you can prepare for the future with any of our various occupational programs or college transfer courses. NRCC faculty members are well known not just for their academic background, but also for their capacity to work closely and effectively with students. All faculty who teach college transfer courses have doctorates or master’s degrees, while those in occupational programs have a diverse background which combines academics with practical on-the-job experience. In recent years individual professors and college programs have received state and national awards for their quality.

The Student Resources Advisor reports directly to the Dean of Student Services. The Advisor assists College leadership with development and implementation of the College’s holistic student support efforts. The position works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external agencies to identify, design, and implement best practices and appropriate interventions to support students’ non-academic needs to enhance their success in college.
Responsibilities:
  • Expand existing support services by developing and implementing new interventions, with a special focus on helping students overcome non-academic barriers, including but not limited to the following:
    • Food insecurity
    • Housing insecurity
    • Childcare needs
    • Transportation needs
    • SNAP benefits
    • Medical insurance
    • Mental health and substance abuse referrals
    • Limitations on access to computers, internet, Wi-Fi, and other technology supports


  • Work collaboratively with community agencies to identify, design, and implement best practices and appropriate interventions to support students’ success in college.

  • Maintain a student resources webpage and community resources document that provide details about the available support services.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to identify gaps in support services and to promote available support services to students and the campus community.

  • Provide management of the College’s food pantries to include expansion of available food options.

  • Coordinate resource fairs/events at both college locations.

  • Supervise a part-time, grant-funded Student Resources Specialist position.

  • Serve as college liaison and point-of-contact for the Collegiate Recovery Program.

  • Continually monitor and track usage of support services and their impact on students’ success throughout their college journey.

  • Work collaboratively with Institutional Research to analyze and improve effectiveness of support services and intervention strategies.

  • Maintain a student caseload for academic advising and intentional engagement purposes.

  • Teach college success skills course (SDV 100), as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university.


  • Understanding of and commitment to community college philosophy.

  • Demonstrated caseload management skills.

  • Understanding of available community resources and a demonstrated ability to assist individuals in accessing needed supports.

  • Experience working with community service organizations and/or state programs, such as SNAP and Single-Stop.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to engage and provide support to students.

  • Demonstrated effective problem-solving and planning skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in various forms including strong presentation and facilitation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.


  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in caseload management and support services.

  • Successful experience in designing and implementing best practices and appropriate interventions to support students’ success in college.

  • Experience with and/or knowledge of mental health resources and referrals.
