About us
Sheet Metal Workers Local 28, est. 1913, is an organized labor union serving New York City and Long Island. The Apprenticeship Training Center, located at 139-20 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, NY is home to the Local 28 Apprenticeship Program.
Our facility consists of a full-sized shop, AWS accredited welding testing facility, computer-aided drafting room and three classrooms which can also be used for hand sketching training and lectures.
Our program strives to equip our apprentices with the hard and soft skills necessary to become financially solvent, socially responsible members of the greater New York City community.
As a Program Specialist at our organization, you will work with a team of coworkers to create and manage educational programs for our apprentices and union members . As an experienced professional with a background in data management and customer service, the successful candidate will be highly dedicated, flexible and able to manage various tasks with competing deadlines that will benefit not only our students but other key stakeholders within and outside our organization.
Duties
- Work under the direction of the JAC Administrator and office manager on the development, implementation, evaluation, and oversight of the Local 28 Apprenticeship Training Program to provide career placement, class scheduling, Learning Management System support and troubleshooting to various levels of internal staff, apprentice, and signatory contractors.
- Assist in coordination of various aspects of day-to-day operations and project implementation.
- Register apprenticeship program participants, monitor attendance, collect paperwork related to apprenticeship and update/archive in the appropriate proprietary systems.
- Build relationships with key union and management representatives to provide apprentices with the proper resources and support.
- Participate in screening, selection, and certificate evaluation of apprentices to assure competent apprentice is selected for job assignments.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience required in, education related fields, or labor/management work.
- Minimum three (3) year experience handling workforce development programs, higher education, training, career counseling or labor management programs required.
- Basic skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and calender management. Preferred Intermediate understanding of databases and how queries work within a database.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills.
- Project management skills: Flexible, good organizational skills, ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work under pressure establish priorities, and constructive program planning.
- Experience within trades sector or unions highly preferred but not required.
- Must be able to simplify complex information.
- Ability to travel to various locations in the New York City Area.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
