Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for the position of RACES student team member. The RACES Student Worker will contribute to the work of the NSF-funded RACES team, comprised of faculty from NSC, UNLV, and CCSD, as well as staff from The Nature Conservancy and a local farming business.

This student will be heavily involved in planning and implementing a series of 1-day workshops, liaising with campus faculty and staff to educate them on the mission of the project and encourage participation in Phase II of the project, completion of research on national repositories on learning experience in regenerative agriculture, and facilitating conversations with educators and students regarding barriers to STEM involvement by underrepresented groups.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for interacting with students at NSC, UNLV, and CSN to foster collaboration in designing learning objective for the project outcomes. This will involve coordination of day-long workshops, including designing the scheduled group activities, email notifications, meeting minutes and documenting outcomes once workshops are complete
  • Complete extensive research and synthesis of findings on current, open-source curricular models so that the team can consider options for our own learning activities
  • Assist with special efforts to facilitate conversations with student in NSC's School of Education and LAS that will push this project forward, setting intermediate goals that facilitate reaching project outcomes.
  • Promote the project goals with NSC students, faculty and staff, and recruit participants for the 4, day-long workshops being held in 2022.
  • Lead small group discussion both in the day-long workshops and at local high schools to determine some of the most prevalent barriers to self-efficacy and self-identify within STEM fields.
  • Interact with the NSC community via social media to promote interest in the RACES project

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at NSC.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with students, staff and faculty effectively.
  • Passion for developing culturally relevant learning activities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Interest in climate change outreach and education.
  • Strong support for a welcoming and inclusive Nevada State culture.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with developing learning activities and online curriculum.
  • Training in Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity either in previous job or through academic experiences.
  • Interest in environmental justice issues and sensitivity to the need for more inclusive curricular experiences.

Work Hours:

Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

Hourly Rate:

$14.50 per hour
