Summer Associate Job at AmeriCorps
4.3 million Texans are food insecure (Feeding America/Map The Meal Gap, 2018). This means that at some point in the last year, food-insecure families either experienced hunger outright or altered their consumption patterns to avoid hunger. Texas has the seventh highest rate of childhood food insecurity in the nation, with 1.6 million Texas children facing food insecurity (Feeding America, 2020). These indicators threaten the financial stability of Texas families. Fortunately, numerous public and private programs and community organizations aim to curb food insecurity. Summer Meals is an important way to help ensure Texas children receive nutritious meals, especially when school is not in session. The Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty (BCHP) has ongoing, multiyear programs that support Summer Meals in Texas in order to reduce child food insecurity. We work hand-in-hand with the Texas Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture to market programs to the public, conduct community outreach, and strengthen the capacity of local organizations to operate Summer Meals. As summer begins, BCHP works in communities to promote new and existing sites and to provide additional resources to sites. Throughout the summer, our teams work with community organizations to ensure that as sites close midsummer, families are aware of other sites nearby. Finally, as the summer wraps up, BCHP staff work to connect organizations operating summer sites with sponsors who can provide meals afterschool, when appropriate.
Member Duties : Summer Associates' work will contribute to overall programmatic goals, which include: 1. Retain summer meal sponsors and increase afterschool sponsors, resulting in increased-year-round food access to low income children. 2. Increase the number of year-round providers who serve summer and afterschool meals, resulting in increased year-round food access to low income children. 3. Coordinate and lead one-on-one and group trainings for summer and afterschool sponsors and site coordinators enhancing their capacity to operate effective and compliant child nutrition programs. 4. Facilitate collaborations among stakeholders working in communities to alleviate childhood hunger. 5. Conduct outreach to promote summer meals sites. 6. Assist regional child nutrition partners with program best practices related to COVID -19 policy changes. 7. Some outreach to Meals to You (rural, national summer feeding program) program participants as needed.
