The Swim Lesson Instructor (or Instructor Aide) is responsible for working in the water, assisting in conducting aquatic instruction for members and participants. Providing support and encouragement to assist students in learning to swim.
Following employment, the Greater Philadelphia YMCA will cover the cost of the training and training hours required to secure YMCA Swim Lesson Certification. Successful completion of this certification will result in increased compensation. $13 - $16 payrate depending on experience and level of certification.
What You Will Do:
Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information and to convey detailed, spoken instructions to staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately, quickly, and loudly. Ability to perceive the nature of sounds by ear; ability to lift and carry 50-75 pounds; ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling. Ability to move about on foot quickly; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where they actually are and clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
Environmental Conditions:
The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.

What You Will Do:
- Provide a safe environment that allows members and participants to learn to swim.
- Encourage and support students to provide an enjoyable aquatics experience.
- Evaluate swimming skills; complete progress reports for each session; complete communications for parents.
- Assist in the instruction of swimming skills and techniques in accordance with YMCA standards, under the direct supervision of a certified YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor
- Participate as a part of the aquatics staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment.
- Respect others by arriving on time and in accordance with schedule.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Communicate all pool rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- 15 years of age with successful completion of swimming skills test.
- Pursue YMCA swim Lesson Instructor certification.

- CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
- Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
- Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
- Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
