Job Description

This position is a comprehensive system administrator position that predominantly handles our server administration while also working on network administration when needed, with assistance from a contracted network services vendor. The other staff in the IT department perform programming, data entry, end user support, security monitoring,
IT purchasing, project coordination, and administration. Your day will be anything but routine as a member of this team.

Performs highly complex (senior-level) work involving coordination and the direct performance of activities associated with sustaining server and network systems to include evaluation, installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, hardening of systems based on agency policies and industry best practices. Collaborates with agency’s system owners, IT application development staff, and third-party system providers for application support needs, optimize application performance, and troubleshoot application issues. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per workweek, be on-call, and travel to our co-location.

Operational

Server - Monitor, manage, update and upgrade virtual Windows servers, including domain controllers and on-site
Exchange server (moving to O365 in the future). Manage physical servers and connections at the co-location. Monitor and manage storage space. Keep servers healthy so they are up and running.

  • Consistently monitor systems, subsystems, and software applications
  • Provide analysis of current server environment
  • Plans, tests and implements application upgrades, from minor patch deployments to major version upgrades
  • Create and modify scripts, to automate routines, when possible
  • Provide status reports to management, including regular and ad-hoc reports
  • Active working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Manage, maintain and update the organizational structure for all user accounts, groups, roles, including tracking license usage
  • Provides information, direction and/or recommendations regarding server equipment and software

Network

  • Monitor, manage, and update the network (equipment and connections, as needed) at the physical office location and the co-location where some network equipment and all of the servers reside.
  • Manage the Wireless Access Points.
  • Setup and monitor management consoles for network and firewall.
  • Setup and manage VPN connections for agency staff.
  • Keep network in healthy so it is up and running. Experience with Cisco, Meraki, and Barracuda a plus.

Support

  • Troubleshoot and aid with user application access and provide good customer service
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve systems, hardware, software, and networking issues
  • Decision making with critical thinking
  • Problem Solving in a coordinated manner with existing IR team
  • Determine operational, technical, and system requirements for the location, installation, operation, and maintenance of applications server environments
  • Work collaboratively to diagnose a variety of complex infrastructure issues as well as automating routine processes
  • Interface with software vendors to obtain information and support for problems, coordinate systems repair as required
  • Effectively communicate with and work alongside vendors who assist with network changes and server related issues.

Documentation

  • Map and design application environment including the connectivity and dependencies of the applications, and other modeling documentation as needed.
  • Documentation for application procedures for shutdown, start up, back up, and restore
  • Document IP ranges and current usage/assignments
  • Document hardware port usage/assignments
  • Document physical office wall ports and usage/assignments
  • Assist with tracking laptop and other teleworking equipment assignments
  • Password documentation for vendor account portals, internal admin accounts, etc.
  • Document software license keys and track usage/assignments
  • Document network mapping including physical hardware, software management consoles, data flow and IP usage.
  • Maintain, document, and improve internal IT services and policies.

Future Planning

  • Gather data for performance tuning
  • Assist with planning

  • Coordinate, plan, and schedule the installation of new or revised systems, and define business process requirements
  • Assist in preparation of disaster recovery plan
  • Analyze, recommend, and implement system changes for efficiency and performance

Qualifications - Minimum

  • Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with major course work in comp science, computer info systems, information systems, or a related field is preferred
  • 3 years of progressive experience in system administration, including the Microsoft Windows Server 20xx environment
  • Experience troubleshooting server hardware and software integrations
  • network administration

  • Experience creating/maintaining accurate documentation of current environments
  • Experience creating/maintaining accurate documentation of security protocols at various levels
  • Experience maintaining hardware and software inventory
  • Experience in Texas State Agencies or local municipalities
  • Knowledge with Microsoft Access Identity Management
  • Skilled at documenting processes and procedures.
