Job Summary:

The Ophthalmic Technician performs advanced technical ophthalmic procedures, measurements and tests to provide physician data and assist in patient care.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
  • Communicates with patients regarding follow up care, surgeries, procedures, symptoms, medications
  • Conduct and record ophthalmologic testing
  • Assist in surgical procedures, set up instrument tray
  • Perform ocular fluorescein staining, external irrigation and aseptic skin preparation procedures, topical anesthetic and medication, instill medications and dressing applications
  • Assist in corneal cultures, skin lesion removal, suture removal and other minor surgeries
  • Clean and sterilize instruments
  • Routine maintenance of equipment and surgical instruments
  • Communication with other physician offices and pharmacies
  • Participate in on-the-job training for personnel
  • Comply with HIPPA confidentiality standards
Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of Medical Terminology (preferably ophthalmology)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with patients and employees in a courteous, professional manner at all times
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year of experience in similar role preferred
  • COA or COT certification is preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds
  • Travel to other offices as needed
