Description:

The Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS), a 9th to 12th grade public high school located in Cambridge, MA, seeks a temporary Technical Assistant in its childcare program, “First Steps”. This program enrolls up to 15 children ages 8 weeks to 2.9 years of age, who are placed in one of two classrooms based on age. One of the program’s central missions is to provide childcare services to infants and toddlers of current high school students to ensure that they may complete their high school education. In addition, Cambridge Public School employees may enroll their children in the daycare program on a space-available basis at a tuition cost. The center follows the Cambridge Public School’s calendar and operates from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a 10 month period.


The Technical Assistant will work a 8.0 hour day, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a 10 month period. Reporting directly to the Director of Childcare and Teen Parenting Program, the Technical Assistant will:


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement curriculum and activities for one or two age-specific classrooms: 8 weeks to 15 months and 15 months to 2.9 years.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Childcare and Teen Parenting Program and staff, plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum for infants and toddlers. Attend curriculum planning and staff meetings.
  • Maintain and oversee each child’s daily records, which include daily meal reporting, diaper changing charts, and attendance.
  • Working with the Director of Childcare and Teen Parenting Program and staff, establish schedules, routines and procedures that are responsive to the individual needs of each child as well as the group as a whole.
  • Create a nurturing, caring, and safe environment for all children attending the daycare center.
  • Establish clear and age-appropriate behavioral expectations for the group and each child that sets the tone for the classrooms.
  • Provide support, guidance and assistance to all fellow staff in the center. Be flexible and willing to provide coverage when needed in the classroom(s).
  • Communicate with each child’s parents/families about their child’s needs and activities on a daily basis. Continue to build relationships with parents/families.
  • Act as a resource for teen parents.
  • Support, guide and work with students who, through the Rindge Technical School of Arts’ Early Education Program, observe and intern/volunteer at the center.
  • Collaborate with the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School administrative, teaching, clerical, security and custodial staff.
  • Establish a culture of high expectations in the daycare center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Childcare and Teen Parenting Program, including housekeeping duties.

Professional Qualifications:

  • High school diploma.
  • 21+ years of age.
  • 2 to 3 years teaching experience working with multi-age groups of infants and toddlers in a licensed day care.
  • Licensed as a Daycare provider.
  • Meet the Department of Early Education and Care standards, including CPR, health, and First Aid trainings.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, alongside the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff, parents/families, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and the Rindge School of Technical Arts.
  • Maintain high standards of professional ethics.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Willing to continually increase knowledge of early childhood education.
  • Able to multi-task and perform a multi-faceted job in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
