The Therapeutic Recreation Assistant assists in planning and conducting a comprehensive program of recreational, social and educational activities for residents living in the licensed areas. Leads small, medium & large groups. Contributes to resident care plans and assessments. Assists with department documentation and paperwork. Promotes resident rights, self-direction, participation, independence and individuality.
Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Assists in planning, organizing and leading Therapeutic Recreation programs specific to resident needs, interests and abilities.
  • Identifies, adapts and modifies programming to maximize resident participation.
  • Takes initiative for creating new programs based on resident needs and interests.
  • Is prepared for weekly meetings and contributes innovative ideas
  • Assists with department documentation and paperwork.
  • Is able to multi-task, think ahead and meet department deadlines
  • Prepares each TR program in advance
  • Conducts all scheduled programs and begins them on time
  • Has room set up prior to program. Room is cleaned up and items put away immediately after each program.
  • Maintains flexible work hours to accommodate a broad range of time frames necessary to support department programming.
  • Operates van in a safe, responsible manner
  • Reports mechanical and/or safety problems to DOM and TRD in a timely fashion.
  • Observes all state and city speed and safety regulations.
  • Maintains communication with facility while transporting residents. Checks out cell phone prior to leaving facility and carries phone when away from vehicle.
  • Maintains safe programming environment.
  • Adheres to all attendance, compliance, mandatory training, regulatory and safety standards, including the Code of Conduct; as well as the Organizations Policies and Procedures covering Privacy and Security in Compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Requirements:

  • Must possess as a minimum a high school diploma or its equivalent along with certification as an activity aide or be eligible to become certified.
  • Must possess a class “C” driver’s license.
  • Very good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to speak, write, read and understand English.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and direct Therapeutic Recreational programming.
  • Knowledge of computer software including use of outlook, word, excel and publisher.
  • Able to make mature judgements in personnel matters, health & safety issues and crisis situations.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter needing minimal supervision.
  • Must possess ability to deal tactfully with staff, volunteers, residents, family members and visitors.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds
  • Walks, bends, lifts, stoops and stands the majority of the day.
  • Frequent pushing of wheelchairs, tables, carts.
  • Work is performed primarily in the Activities Room, Back Porch area or in common areas on the individual units.
  • Involves retrieval of equipment and supplies from various storage locations.
  • Duties involves trips away from facility. Driving, loading individuals/walkers and wheelchairs onto the van or bus.
  • Duties involve dexterity of hands and fingers for varied activities.
  • Job requires continuous talking, hearing ordinary conversations and seeing with near/far vision.
  • Occasional exposure to hot or cold environment.
