A Teacher Aide at the Helen Keller School (HKS) is responsible for providing the highest level of front line care for our students. Our Teacher Aide makes effective decisions and solves problems using sound judgement, guided initiative and teamwork.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate will possess a love for students with multiple disabilities. All students at HKS possess a sensory impairment along with at least one other area of disability. The Helen Keller School is searching for individuals who have a heart for students with more severe special needs and are willing to whatever is necessary to provide limitless opportunities for our students.

REPORTS TO: Principal of Helen Keller School

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation and Disabilities Studies, Collaborative Teaching, Education, or Counseling.
  • Must hold a Master’s Degree or Certification in Rehabilitation Counseling, Collaborative Approach to Training Transition Specialist (CATTS), Transition Specialist, and/or Rehabilitation Leadership Management and Collaborative Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successful experience in a school and/or residential setting.
  • Successful work experience in program and employee supervision.
  • Successful experience working with children with disabilities in education or rehabilitation setting.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation of level INTERMEDIATE PLUS upon employment.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have experience that indicates ability to maintain effective communication with staff members and stakeholders.
  • Must demonstrate excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation SURVIVAL PLUS must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment. A sign language proficiency evaluation of INTERMEDIATE PLUS must be attained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Act as a liaison between HKS and VRS. Provide assistance and leadership as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between HKS and Regional Centers. Provide assistance and leadership as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between HKS and E. H. Gentry. Provide assistance and leadership as needed.
  • Provide environmental analysis for home communities and update as necessary.
  • Provide job analysis on potential job placements.
  • Assist parents/guardians in identifying potential employers in the home community.
  • Contact and maintain effective relationships with parents and families.
  • Provide on-going feedback and collaboration to families, HKS administration, as well as HKS teachers to ensure students’ needs are met.
  • Conduct site visits as required.
  • Link parents and appropriate agencies and make referrals.
  • Assist in building partnerships with local employers to establish work sites for HKS students.
  • Approve and submit Worker Day Sheets in a timely manner.
  • Develop a written, comprehensive summary of activities, as required.
  • Coordinate and link community resources.
  • Maintain quality of services in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Document and maintain individual IEP’s in accordance with state and federal requirements.
  • Submit required annual reports.
  • Maintain current Transition Registry.
  • Conduct annual follow-up of graduates for consecutive years as specified.
  • Plan and conduct annual transition meetings at each AIDB Regional Center.
  • Supervise all transition staff members (communicates directives; establishes goals for departmental improvement through collaboration with transition department; establishes accountability for staff members in the transition department; and guides staff in implementing a program that prepares students for E. H. Gentry and workforce skill acquisition).
  • Cover staff vacancies in the transition department to ensure student safety and education if subs cannot be secured.
  • Demonstrate appropriate grooming, dress, self-control, self-confidence.
  • Communicate clearly and correctly verbally and through written language.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member in implementing school programs.
  • Practice professional ethics and confidentiality.
  • Be punctual to work, meetings and appointments.
  • Remain abreast of information pertinent to the field of work.
  • Keep appropriate staff informed of information regarding students.
  • Ensure transition building is clean, tidy and professional.
  • Ensure the RISE PAES program is maintained, implemented, and data is collected and tracked.
  • Gather E.H. Gentry and workforce skill requirements, compile appropriate curriculum materials to address these identified skills; and collaborate with residential and academic staff to implement these skills.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by HKS Academic Director and Principal.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY: $47,400 - $63,130 Scale I1 Rank 2T (BS-Class B Certification)
$55,559 - $72,508 Scale I1 Rank 1T (MA-Class A Certification)
$59,147 - $76,624 Scale I1 Rank AA (AA-Certification)
Direct deposit is required.
The annual employment period will be 197 days to include such holidays, sick leave, insurance benefits, and other benefits as are established by the President and the Board of Trustees.

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
