PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Position provides services to assigned schools in the investigation and counseling of students to resolve truancy, excessive absences, and tardiness problems. Position assesses students and families, interprets attendance policies, works as a team member to develop prevention/intervention strategies, provides case management, monitors student progress; and makes referrals. Position also serves as district liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies, and court personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Investigates cases of unexcused and excessive absences and tardies and enforces provisions of compulsory attendance laws, Board and administrative policies
- Collaborates with social workers and other school staff to develop interventions for students who are truant and develops individualized service plans to improve attendance
- Serves as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies as it relates to student attendance issues
- Assists with implementing truancy prevention programs for assigned schools and recommends strategies to support and improve regular school attendance (i.e.: incentives, peer groups and recognitions)
Consultation:
- Acts as a resource to administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and health services personnel at assigned schools regarding attendance programs, interpretation of attendance policies/laws, and recordkeeping requirements
- Participates in individual or group counseling sessions whenever requested by administration or counseling staff.
- Refers to administration any student who appears to have exceptional problems which interfere with school attendance.
- Maintains contact and acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies and courts in the area of student truancy.
Communication:
- Implements and complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education, local board policy and communicates relevant policies to parents and students.
- Initiates legal proceedings to enforce compulsory attendance laws; prepares information for formal hearings; and represents the school district
- Maintains necessary records ensuring confidentiality of students and their families
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including records of all cases investigated and reports
Outreach:
- Makes home visits to assess the needs of students with attendance problems or as directed by the school administration
- Monitors areas in the community where non-attending students are reported to congregate during school hours and takes appropriate action by executing enforcement steps
- Provides families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to families by providing support activities and communicates the importance of school attendance
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience:
Minimum three (3) years of job related experience within education, counseling, and/or social work required. Previous experience in educational setting preferred.
Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, frequent district-wide travel, and occasional walking, running, and climbing.
Skill, Knowledge, Abilities:
- Strong communication skills; ability to communicate in Spanish preferred
- Knowledge of state compulsory attendance laws
- Ability to interpret laws, policies, and procedures
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to operate personal computer to develop databases and do word processing
- Ability to travel district-wide to conduct home visits and visit sites where truant students have been reported to the district
- Ability to react calmly and quickly in an emergency situation
