Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC), founded in 1975, is one of 45 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

The pre-award team at LCCC is currently staffed by 10 specialists, the largest unit of this kind in the School of Medicine. The team supports an average of over 425 submissions per year, including 250 new applications. The team strives to provide excellent grant submission support to over 125 research faculty, and their teams, across basic, translational, clinical, and population science cancer research.

Position Summary
The LCCC pre-award grants team supports interdisciplinary research groups of investigators at LCCC and collaborating institutions (e.g., Duke University, Washington University, Dana Farber Cancer Institute), in submitting grant applications. The Pre-award Specialist is responsible for submission of grants, ensuring all sponsor guidelines and expectations are met. This position will work on multiple, unique, grant applications at a time, working independently to manage their time and meet university and sponsor deadlines. They will coordinate and communicate with research team members (e.g., faculty principal investigators and co-investigators, non-faculty project managers, and departmental administrators from across the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, and Arts and Sciences as well as collaborating institutions), institutional research administration officials (e.g., Office of Sponsored Programs and Sponsored Programs Office, Institutional Review Board, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) and sponsors (e.g., National Institutes of Health, American Association for Cancer research.

Research, V-Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation). This position will submit non-financial progress reports, as needed, for funded projects.

The Pre-Award Specialist will be expected to review and understand sponsor and university guidelines and policies and communicate those to research team members. They will use sponsor submission portals including Cayuse, Proposal Central, Assist, grants.gov, etc. The Pre-Award Specialist will work independently, create and adhere to timelines and deadlines.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with Microsoft Excel Formulas, Microsoft Word. Ability to interpret and manipulate basic data.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Basic knowledge of NIH or other Sponsor grants policies and procedures.
