Job Title, Maintenance Worker, G.12 - $31,342.73/annually, $15.07/hourly

MINIMUMS: Completion of 7th grade plus one (1) year of experience in labor-intensive fields, such as municipal public works/utilities maintenance or construction, utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements

Utility Mechanic I, G.14 - $32,194.50/annually, $15.48/hourly

MINIMUMS: High School or GED plus two (2) years of experience in positions such as Maintenance Worker/Laborer or in a similar field such as utility maintenance. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. Water/Sewer Line Maintenance: Must be able to obtain a Type A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Air Brakes Certification and Tanker Endorsement within nine (9) months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Job duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Perform manual labor such as hand excavation and movement of heavy items in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer lines and mains
  • Lifting, without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds
  • Check and clean sanitary sewer manholes, laterals, mains, etc.
  • Utilize computerized mapping to navigate service area and identify utilities
  • May assist Crew Leader on occasion to enter or research data on a laptop or tablet in the field
  • May occasionally work in a confined space
  • Display knowledge and proper use and care of basic hand tools & hydraulic tools, common maintenance, and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
  • Ensure the proper tools, equipment, and materials are available to complete daily routine maintenance and repairs
  • Assist crew members in stocking of vehicles, loading and unloading materials, and equipment
  • Maintain personal protective equipment
  • Operate motor vehicles and construction equipment
  • Positions require medium-heavy work involving walking, standing, stooping, climbing (as necessary) and hand digging
  • Follow oral direction and written instructions and safety precautions/practices for utility construction work
  • Attend safety and job-related trainings as assigned
  • Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs
  • NOTE: Candidates selected for the Utility Mechanic I position that do not already possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) MUST be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then obtain a full Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements with nine (9) months of employment.

New employee to the City? If you already have a Class A, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with above endorsements, a $2,000.00 hiring Bonus will be offered as follows:

  • $500 with first paycheck
  • $500 first pay period following six-month interim evaluation - with “meets expectations” performance rating
  • $1,000 at conclusion of probationary period of one (1) year - with “meets expectations” performance rating

**Once hiring bonus is paid out over a year, a $2,000 annual stipend will be applied ($76.92 per pay period – every two weeks)
