What You'll Be Doing

Are you looking for a progressive shelter with a fun team to work with? We are a municipal shelter that is well-funded and well-supported by both our County government and community. We offer high quality medicine and surgery for shelter pets – including digital radiographs, in-house chemistry machine, possibility for various elective surgeries in addition to spay/neuter, two techs per veterinarian, ability to refer to various local practices (exotics, dental disease, orthopedics, etc.) in the area as well as after-hours emergency clinics for ongoing management of cases – to name a few things. We also partner with all local Animal Control Agencies for case consultations, forensic exams and expert witness testimony.

Now for the fun part – we have in-house cooking competitions with trophies, a Sunshine Committee to keep morale up with team members, ongoing team building events – and the vet team is known for their food and celebrations! If this sounds like somewhere you see yourself, please apply!

About Our Team

Environmental Services concentrates on environmental concerns and is made up of divisions that work to educate the public and regulate and enforce activities in the environmental and health arenas. Water quality, wastewater disposal, food protection, solid waste disposal, environmental education, soil erosion, drinking water, animal control, environmental hazards, rural and agricultural issues, and involvement in air quality issues are all part of the program activities of the Department of Environmental Services. The Wake County Animal Center is an open-admission animal shelter operated by Wake County. We receive all stray, abandoned and surrendered pets in Wake County. We work in partnership with fosters, volunteers and local rescues, to treat and rehome thousands of homeless animals every year.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine
No specific experience required
NCVL - North Carolina Veterinary License
Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted
Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
Two years or more experience in a high quality, high volume Spay Neuter Surgery center

Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, including effective and accurate sharing of information

Hiring Range: $73,164 - $102,429
