This position is scheduled for four ten-hour days once the training has been completed. In addition, the position is on-call several shifts a month. Seeking candidates with experience in the Victim's Services field, who have the ability to work all hours and days to include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime with little to no advance notice as needed. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required for this grant funded position.

Salary Range: $26.67 - $35.08/hour
Hiring salary is $26.67/hour (Level 1 of the Step Plan) for incumbents who meet minimum qualifications and do not have previous direct experience in this position. Victim's services experience may be considered for laterals on a year for year basis.

This class consists of professional and administrative work in the Victim Services Unit within the Police Department. Work involves assisting victims of crime, witnesses, volunteers, and others associated with Victim Services. Assist and advocate for victims and witnesses through the criminal justice process in an informative, supportive manner that encourages their involvement and input into the process. The incumbent assists the coordinator in the daily assignments of the program. Provides statutorily mandated crime victims' rights and/or assistance to crime victims, witnesses, and victims of traumatic incidents by assessing client needs and seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions, and community based agencies. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, judicial and law enforcement agencies, and community based agencies in delivering effective and innovative services.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

Provide crisis intervention and assistance to victims of crime and survivors of victims in order to help them regain physical and mental well being by means of immediate crisis intervention, advocacy, and community referrals. Assist in preparing and maintaining lists of community resources and makes referrals to these resources. Work closely as a liaison with district attorneys' office in coordination with their victims' assistance programs. Assist with filing and statistical systems to ensure that victim information and assistance for periodic reports of accomplishments. Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences as necessary for the maintenance of effective services. Assist volunteers in performing duties when required. Follow policies, procedures, and standards for efficient and effective operation and maintenance of operations. Operate a motor vehicle and personal computer. Identify and recommend improvements in divisional operations to ensure victim assistance functions are efficient and cost-effective. Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training - Bachelor's degree preferred from an accredited college or university in social sciences, psychology, or a closely related field.

Experience - A minimum of three years experience in the victim services field or similar professional experience in the human services field. Experience with victim and witness issues, the criminal justice system, statutorily mandated rights of crime victims and experience in volunteer administration.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

Necessary Special Requirements - Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: phone screening interview, oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, CVSA, driving check through DMV, pre and post psychological examination, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The noise level in the environment is moderate. The work schedule is varied and the incumbent must be available to work any day of the week including evening, weekend, holidays, and overtime. The incumbent must be on-call and available to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes with little or no notice. The incumbent may meet with victims and witnesses at the police department, or in various locations requiring travel by personal or Department motor vehicle. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Physical demands are described as sedentary (exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
