Job Description
The Iona University COAMFTE-accredited Marriage and Family Therapy Program invites applications for a one year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2023-2024. The visiting assistant professor will have an annual contract to work with MFT graduate level student in the New York-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences for the Fall and Spring semesters. The visiting faculty member will have the following courses as part of their teaching assignment: Ethics, Law, and Professional Issues, Psychopathology and Systemic Diagnosis, Human Sexuality, Theories and Systemic Techniques and Supervision. Additionally, this faculty position requires an in-person presence and is not open to remote hire. The responsibilities of the position are as follows:
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as integral member of the Marriage & Family Therapy faculty team
- Provide instruction to section(s) of graduate marriage and family therapy (MFT) courses as outlined in departmentally developed, competency-based course syllabi (inclusive of holding classes as scheduled)
- Provide faculty mentoring to students completing MFT Capstone and academic advising of students
- Utilize a range of teaching and/or supervision strategies that support the presentation of course material, including (as appropriate), conducting live supervision through the use of live observational recording software, and the use of Medicat electronic medical records, Tevera students academic record platform and other instructional technology as needed
- Where appropriate, collaborate/coordinate with faculty assigned to other sections of a shared course to ensure consistency of content delivery
- Participate in regularly scheduled faculty meetings
- Participate and collaborate with the MFT faculty on Programs goals, activities and projects
- Uphold all professional standards as outlined in the AAMFT Code Ethics
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records relative to attendance, assignments, and grades; ensure timely submission of manual attendance records to Registrar
- When serving as a clinical supervisor, ensure timely and accurate sharing of information with the Clinical Director and Program Director, particularly in those instances where a student may be experiencing difficulty in the field site and/or course
- As needed, arrange to be available to meet with individual students outside of class for additional support/direction/clarification related to the course and its requirements
- Familiarize oneself with departmental, school and university policies that may have implications for course delivery (e.g., FERPA regulations, attendance policies, grading policies, weather-related closings, procedures for withdrawal, requests for incompletes etc.)
- When experiencing issues related to course delivery and/or student-related concerns, promptly initiate consultation with Program Director/Department Chair
- Maintain openness to incorporate campus events/activities into the course schedule as may be deemed appropriate by the program
- Utilize the colleges Peoplesoft System to record official grades (inclusive of mid-term and progress report grades when needed)
- Abide by and ensure compliance with all departmental and college policies and procedures
Required Qualifications
- PhD or DMFT degree from an COAMFTE-accredited institution
- License to practice MFT (if applicable in the state within which he/she practices)
- AAMFT Approved Supervisor status or candidacy is required
Required Experience
- Minimum of three years post-graduate practice experience
- Applicants must have teaching experience with evidence of teaching ability and effectiveness
- Experience of providing mental health services for couples, families, individuals, and diverse client populations
- Commitment to fostering a strengths-based, culturally responsive/sustaining, and student-centered learning environment
- Familiarity or willingness to be trained in the use of instructional technology
- Prior MFT teaching experience at the graduate level strongly preferred
