Job Description
Under general supervision, the Journey Mechanic II provides skilled preventative maintenance and repairs on miscellaneous equipment pertaining to the water treatment plant. Employee is responsible for the safe performance of journeyman skills associated with the operations, mechanical and basic electrical maintenance of various pieces of equipment, such as pumps, signal controllers, motors, and other types of machinery, flow meters, chemical feed pumps, emergency generators, air compressors, and construction. The employee works under general direction and has the responsibility to maintain equipment in proper working order to ensure the safe and continuous plant operations. Job requires to be on standby call at all times. Job Responsibilities
1. Performs preventative maintenance and repair activities on a variety of water plant equipment pump and motors, liquid and gas feed systems, air compressors, valves, gear boxed, piping, diesel engines, etc.
2. Performs all phases of mechanic maintenance and repair to the equipment involved such as lubrications, overhauls, belt replacements, etc.
3. Determines the need for replacement parts and supplies, determines time for job completions, cost estimates and reports findings to the supervisor.
4. Operates light and heavy equipment on work tasks as necessary to complete the job.
5. Keeps work area clean and orderly.
6. Works alongside contractors and engineers during improvements or installation of equipment.
7. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions to identify problems that need to be controlled.
8. Restores power under emergency situations. Responsible to restore power from normal to emergency and from emergency to normal by using emergency generators.
9. Troubleshoots fuses, electrical circuits and 440v electric panels. Climbs water towers with proper protective gear to make mechanical and electrical repairs.
10. Paints a variety of plant equipment. Cleans and adds chemicals to clarifiers, domes, towers, filters, etc.
11. Obtains bids and quotes for equipment and lubricants as required.
12. Assists in preparing the departmental budget and assists in other areas of the department when needed (operations, special tasks, etc.)
13. Performs cross-training and back-up services for other departmental positions and other work assignments.
14. Assists with plant tours and plant activities, assists as a plant operator when needed.
15. Coordinates daily work schedules with plant manager or working supervisor to ensure/avoid any effects on daily plant process operations.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned to enhance the overall operations and services of the department. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Job requires a minimum of two (2) years hands-on experience as a mechanic.
3. Job requires a valid Texas Class "C" driver"s license.
4. Job requires a TCEQ Class "B" Surface Water License and a Hazmat Technician Certificate or the ability to obtain licenses within one (1) year of hire.
5. Must be familiar with SCADA systems.
6. Job requires knowledge of general plumbing, welding, and maintenance equipment, practices and principles of mechanical repair work, occupational hazard and safety precautions.
7. Must be able to use computer, word, excel, copy machine and binding machine.
8. Must be able to use mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, welding machine, winch truck, power saw, soldering iron, and other small tolls required for machine maintenance, light and heavy equipment, torch voltmeter, emergency generators, chlorine dioxide generators, etc.
9. Must be able to read and interpret blue prints, electric and piping schematics, and technical manual for equipment.
10. Must be able to meet electronic and manual reporting requirements.
11. Job requires to follow polices and procedures from Federal, State and City of McAllen.
12. Must be skilled in the diagnosis of equipment defects and the use of hand tools and power equipment to make alterations or repairs.
13. Must have the ability to read and interpret diagrams and written instructions, and perform heavy manual labor as required.
14. Must be able to prepare reports; and is responsible for maintaining records. This job requires mature judgement.
15. Must have the ability to understand written and verbal instructions; and the ability to understand and influence the behavior of others within the organization.
16. Good knowledge of D.C and A.C circuitry analyses; must be able to lead a small crew performing a variety of maintenance or construction tasks.
17. Must be able to meet and greet the public in a friendly courteous manner, using tactic and diplomacy. Physical Requirements
1. Working environment is indoors and outdoors including inclement weather.
2. May be exposed to the following: hazardous materials, deep water, high water pressure leaks, water and hydraulic line breaks; excessive dust, temperature extremes, trench excavations, high and low voltage, rough terrains, wet surfaces, hazardous and toxic atmosphere, confined spaces, water towers, compressed gases, high noise areas, climb water towers.
3. Work involves lifting and installing items into equipment. Includes lifting 50 lbs., standing walking and some driving of city vehicle to purchase equipment and miscellaneous items for the department. Additional Information
1. This position is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
2. This position has no supervisory responsibilities over others.
3. Required to be on call 24/7, 365 days a year. Work may involve irregular schedules including nights, weekends, and/or holidays, during hurricane season and other emergencies. Disclaimer
