Writing Specialist Job at University of New England

University of New England Portland, ME

Professional writing support to graduate and undergraduate students in campus-based and online courses, outreach to students, faculty, and staff, contributing to retention and persistence initiatives, and promoting SASC. This position requires some non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Providing writing support for UNE students
  • Developing and maintaining records related to assigned functions
  • Conducting periodic assessment of writing support and other programs related to area of specialty.
  • Collaborating with other SASC staff on programming for students in on campus and online programs
  • Consulting with UNE faculty, staff, and tutors on writing support needs.
  • Collaborating with Tutor Coordinator on training for writing consultants
  • Attending weekly staff meetings, division meetings, and periodic trainings.
  • Attending professional development activities
  • Outreach to students in academic difficulty due to writing skills deficiencies
  • Using software and learning management systems to communicate with students both synchronously and asynchronously to discuss their written work.
  • Understanding and complying with the University of New England safety manual, specifically in the annually required training in the areas of Code of Conduct, FERPA, Fire Safety, Red Flag, and Sexual Harassment Prevention.
  • Performing other related functions as assigned.

Qualifications
Master’s level degree in a relevant discipline, plus at least two years experience teaching/working in the area of academic writing support in a post-secondary setting or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Experience with technology for synchronous and asynchronous distance learning.
  • Ability to work with students individually and in groups.
  • Ability to adapt to individual learning needs.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse populations, including adult learners, students who are non-native speakers of English, students who are academically under-prepared, and students who receive accommodations for documented disabilities.
  • Ability to support and enhance the following learning skills and executive functions: questioning and probing, problem solving, critical thinking, planning, organizing and decision-making, especially as they relate to graduate level writing.
  • Ability to function collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff to provide an integrated approach to addressing learning assistance.
