Class Summary

Under general supervision, performs skilled journey-level work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of aquatic equipment and facilities including fountains, water features and swimming pools; to test and maintain aquatic facility water quality as required by health codes and safety standards; may lead others in a small crew setting; and performs other work as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.

Essential Duties:
Assists with planning and scheduling of aquatic related maintenance; performs skilled journey-level mechanical and electrical maintenance duties; prepares and maintains all necessary records of work activities and other reports through the use of computers; assists in requisition of equipment and supplies; maintains, cleans, calibrates and repairs all chemical and water related aquatic equipment such as chemical injectors, pumps, filters, water flow meters and valves; conducts tests on aquatic facility water; applies proper amounts of chemicals and performs proper backwashing procedures; maintains consistent water balance and quality required by state and local health codes and safety standards; keeps accurate records on water quality and conditions of facility equipment, materials and supplies; reports and logs safety incidents and malfunctions; initiates service requests for support services.

Minimum Qualifications

The basic requirements are experience maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, and piping which must include time repairing and maintaining a variety of mechanical equipment and maintaining water quality for a large commercial or public aquatic facility.

Knowledge of: water systems chemistry and aquatics equipment; basic fabrication, plumbing and electrical principles; safe handling of hazardous chemicals; basic math; use of manual tools, power tools and cleaning equipment; cleaning tools, solutions and equipment; safe work practices and procedures; and related personal computer applications.

Ability to: take accurate measurements; mix and measure solvents and chemicals; learn about alternative cleaning solutions and methods of application; read charts, blue prints and gauges; safely and properly operate pool equipment; use of a personal computer; follow oral and written instructions; perform mechanical tasks; provide effective customer service; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public; and lead the work of others.

Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED program AND four years of experience in the maintenance of aquatics related facilities and equipment or equivalent combination of education, experience and certification.

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California class "C" driver's license. Highly desirable: Pool and Spa Operator Certificate.

Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions: Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be willing to work indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays and be subject to emergency call outs. Must be able to climb ladders, work within limited access locations and swim.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Aquatics Maintenance Technician is a single position class that performs a variety of skilled maintenance, monitoring and repair of the City's pools, fountains and water features. It is distinguished from a Maintenance Craftworker I in that the latter has the responsibility for repair and maintenance of general park equipment and facilities. However, the Aquatics Maintenance Technician and Maintenance Craftworker I's may, on occasion, act as backup to one another.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
