POSITION TITLE: Aquatics Manager
REPORTS TO: Director of Membership Services
CLASSIFICATION: Full Time, Exempt
Facility Information
McKendree MetroRecPlex is a premiere membership based recreation facility in O’Fallon IL. The complex serves as an athletic conditioning and training center for the McKendree University Water Polo, Diving, Swimming and
Ice Hockey teams. The youth athletic organization Southern Illinois Ice Hawks & MetroRecPlex SeaHawks call the complex home. Several high school teams also utilize the facility for games & practices both on the ice & in the pool. The facility includes a comprehensive workout facility including an elevated walking track, a variety of cardio equipment, a complete weight room, half court basketball court as well as fitness classrooms for all types of workout classes. The McKendree MetroRecPlex also offers many programs like PlexSkate, PlexSwim, PLEX
Kids After School/Summer Camp, figure skating & hockey coaching and personal training.
General Position Description
The Aquatics Manager is responsible for the successful operation of the aquatics department. He/she hires, trains, manages, and oversees the aquatics staff to ensure members receive the highest level of customer service possible.
The Aquatics Manager is responsible for creating, developing and administering all facets of aquatics policies and programs at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex to include: youth and adult swim classes, aquatic fitness classes, private swim lessons, swim teams and open swim and lap swim scheduling and booking community users. This position will play a key role in community and member relations. Also she/he is willing and able to perform any additional or related duties that may be assigned.
Accountabilities
Program Management & Development
- Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community
- Establishes new program activities and expands the program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans
- Compiles program statistics
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of all program information
Staff Engagement & Development
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed
- Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete
- Reviews and evaluates staff performance
- Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals
- Leads regular staff meetings and inservices
- Work with Aquatics Coordinators to ensure optimal training and supervision of lifeguards
Membership Engagement & Development
- Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions
- Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction
- Build relationships with and among members, responds to inquiries and solves problems
- Creates a safe and supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new members
Budget & Financial Management Plans
- Manages department budgets as approved in a fiscally responsible manner
- Responsible for timely and accurate payroll for the department
- Submits monthly financial notes and enrollment numbers on a timely basis
Athletic Organization Administration & Events
- Point of contact for McKendree Athletic teams including Polo, Swim & Dive
- Point of contact for SeaHawks Youth Swim Team
- Book billing into our software system
- Audit any discrepancies
Facility Management
- Responsible for A.E.D and O2 certification and equipment maintenance for the department
- Works with Facilities staff to provide program facilities for members that are safe, clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive
- Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools
- Secures and schedules pool facilities
- Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance
- Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state and local health and safety regulations including maintaining safe ratios of guards and be available on an “on call” basis as required

- Able to set goals and be a self-starter
- Displays the ability to meet and set work flow deadlines

Tools & Equipment:
- Technologically able to use computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio;
- Knowledge of various sports equipment used in fitness programs and swimming pools
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, and talk or hear
- Required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Education and Special Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Business, P.E. or a closely related field preferred
- Directly related aquatics experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified as an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operation (CPO) preferred or willing to complete.
- Certification in first aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and lifeguard training or willing to complete
- Strongly prefer certified as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Life Guard Instructor (LGI)
Salary & Compensation Plan
- Baseline salary $36,000- negotiable depending on experience & certifications
- Bonus structure based on performance metrics
