Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the accurate and timely billing of ambulance transports while maintaining quality and productivity standards. This position will be responsible for billing ambulance claims. The role involves all facets of the billing process; including verification of demographics, coordination of benefits, appropriate claim level billing and claim submission. This also includes proactive outbound telephone calls and communication efforts with facilities, insurances and patients to ensure that the claims are billed out to the appropriate responsible party.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Pre-Billing/Data Entry- Verify and enter patient demographics, personal insurance information and completion of all required signatures found within the patient care report (PCR)
- Knowledgeable to be able to review the PCR for insurance information, medical necessity, and other pertinent information as related to billing
- Request Physician Certification Statements (PCS), prior authorization or other necessary forms for payers as needed
- Verify insurance information via online resources, as well as by telephone
- Attempt to initiate contact with patients when insurance information is not provided at the time of service
- Select and add appropriate payer to patient accounts
- Understand signature requirements and have the ability to recognize valid vs. invalid signatures
- Recognize and identify appropriate level of service
- Knowledge of ICD-10 and HCPCS codes, as well as associated modifiers
- Identify recurring denials and make necessary system changes
- Requests authorizations prior to billing out cleans claims to the appropriate payer
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills when communicating with patients, payer’s, facilities and co-workers
- Completes special assignments and projects with minimal supervision and consistently meets the department’s performance, production and quality standards
- Processes claims with adherence to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines, and all other state, federal and local regulations
- Other duties as assigned by management
Experience:
- One year of medical billing experience, ambulance preferred
- Must be computer literate
- Skilled in data entry
- Ability to type a minimum of 45 wpm
- Must have knowledge of medical terminology
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner when dealing with employees and management
- Ability to work independently of direct supervision
- Well organized and detail oriented
- Display a willingness to work as a team player
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and to prioritize their importance
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Ambulance/Medical billing certification or diploma, preferred, willingness to obtain certification - CAC (Certified Ambulance Coder)
Work Environment (Essential functions):
- Work is performed in an indoor, open-space environment and stationary setting. Incumbents work with and are surrounded by computerized control panels that require detailed dexterity
- The majority of time is spent in a seated position
- Work entails extensive keyboarding and manual dexterity, and also entails regular reaching, stretching, and lifting of standard dispatch supplies and materials, such as maps, binders, and flip cards

Manual dexterity and typing:
- Extensive use of computers, keyboards, office equipment and similar specialized technical and electronic equipment commonly found in communication centers
- Performing multiple tasks requiring manual dexterity at the same time
- Write legibly
Physical dexterity:
- Sit for extended periods of time; stand or walk as necessary
- Stretch, reach, or lift objects or materials that may be up to 10 pounds in weight
