General Description: Reporting to the Physician Assistant Program Director, the Assistant Professor Faculty position (a 12-month, non-tenure position) combines faculty and administrative responsibilities in order to ensure the efficient operation of the didactic and/or clinical phases of the program as needed. This position requires the individual to assist in both the didactic and clinical phases of the program in order to fill the need of either phase.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the recruiting and interviewing of applicants, student advising and guidance, course coordination, didactic and clinical instruction, clinical site development and program evaluation and assessment. The faculty, acting on both the clinical and academic sides, assists the Program Director, the Associate Program Director and the Academic and Clinical Coordinators in assuring compliance with Programmatic Assessment, University policies and procedures and identifying competencies for the PA Program that reflect the knowledge and skills necessary for the successful completion of the Program, ARC-PA accreditation, passing of the NCCPA board examinations, and professional practice. This is a 1.0 FTE position.


SPECIFIC DUTIES


Administration/Faculty

  • Assists in the recruitment of students utilizing CASPA working with the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, Program Coordinator and the PA Admissions Committee.
  • Participates and assists with the student interview and application process.
  • Serves on Program committees as requested or designated.
  • Maintains appropriate student and administrative records.
  • Assists with development and assessment of program curriculum.
  • In conjunction with the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, Clinical Coordinator and other Program Faculty, develops the clinical phase content of the curriculum including, but not limited to, evaluation of student assessment, preceptor evaluations, site evaluations, and scheduling of students.
  • Assist in the recruitment, development, evaluation, assessment and maintenance of clinical sites.
  • Assist with the continuous collection and analysis of pertinent data necessary for self-study/accreditation and quality improvement, which may include Didactic and Clinical Course performance, Summative Exam performance, OSCE performance, Preceptor Evaluations, Student Midpoint Evaluations, Student Site and Preceptor Evaluations, exit interviews, PACKRAT Performance, PANCE performance, graduate surveys and other items as determined appropriate.
  • Understands and applies ARC-PA standards as they relate to the instruction of curriculum in the PA program
  • Represent the ODU Physician Assistant program with professionalism throughout contacts with faculty, students, and community health partners.
  • Participates in local and national organizations to insure Program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  • Participates in scholarly activities in order to insure personal growth.
  • Attends faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Performs other appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.


Students

  • Assists with student orientation and communication as deemed appropriate throughout the program.
  • Serves as faculty liaison to students.
  • Serves as an academic advisor to designated students throughout their tenure in the Program.
  • Assist in mentoring of students and development of individualized learning plans and remediation processes utilized throughout the curriculum.
  • Tracks and maintains current student files as outlined by the Program.
  • Assist in ongoing tracking and assessment of student performance, preceptor evaluations of students and student evaluation of sites and makes appropriate recommendations of At Risk Students and participates in the PA Progress and Promotion Committee as deemed necessary.
  • Assists in preparing students for the clinical year through training and "boot-camp" sessions as deemed necessary.
  • Assist the Clinical Coordinator with assessment and monitoring of student patient activity logs in the program designated software.
  • Aids students as necessary, in the coordination of professional activities such as resume development, interview and other professional activities during their Clinical Assessment Days during their clinical year.
  • Assists students with administrative licensing/registration activities prior to and after graduation as deemed necessary.
  • Performs other appropriate student activities as assigned by the Program Director.


Instruction/Curriculum

  • Participates in teaching responsibilities relevant to area of expertise and as needed throughout the program.
  • Serves as course coordinator or co-coordinator of classes as determined throughout the Program.
  • Participates in the Curricular Mapping of the NCCPA Content and Task Area Blueprints, PA professional competencies and the ARC PA standards and assists in formulating appropriate curricular modifications based on student PANCE outcomes and course performance data.
  • Completes Course Assessment Forms and Faculty Assessment Form and participates in assessment and evaluation of curriculum as assigned throughout the program.
  • In conjunction with the Program Director, Associate Program Director and Clinical Coordinator, reviews the Student and Preceptor Handbook at least on an annual basis and more frequently as needed.
  • Documents and performs site visits to students on clinical rotation as appropriate and reports updates to the Program Director, Associate Program Director and Clinical Coordinator.
  • Tracks student clinical phase progress and acts accordingly in regards to strengths and weaknesses.

8. Maintains appropriate clinical rotation tracking software and records.

  • Performs other appropriate job related duties as assigned by the Program Director.


Qualifications

  • If the candidate is a PA, then must be a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program with Master's degree or higher in a related discipline.
  • If the candidate is a Physician Assistant then possess a minimum of 2-years of clinical practice as a Physician Assistant and hold a current NCCPA certification as a PA and a current State License as a PA.
  • If the candidate is a physician then they must be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Osteopathic or Medical Doctor Program and possess a current State License by the Ohio Medical Board and have a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience.
  • Possess exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Have a collaborative approach to education and clinical medicine.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Sensitivity to the expectations of students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • Sensitivity to diversity and multi-cultural issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of highly motivated individuals.
