Starting salary is $51k - $57k depending on experience.
Additional 5% salary increase after successful completion of 6-month probationary period.
Plus: Transportation Allowance of $2000/year to be paid over 26 pay periods annually.
The City of Brentwood has an opening to join our team as a Building Inspector I in the Planning & Codes Department.
The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban locations in Tennessee. The city is known for its strong business community, quality schools, abundant recreational activities, and high standard of living. It sits just south of Nashville and has a population of approximately 46,000 residents. Brentwood is a growing community with a very active Planning and Codes department.
The Codes Enforcement section of the Planning and Codes Department works to ensure the safety and quality of the built environment by applying the highest community standards within the Brentwood Municipal Code. The Building Inspector I will work to ensure that buildings and related systems meet or exceed minimum standards for protection of the safety and welfare of the Brentwood community.
The Building Inspector I is responsible for providing information, performing inspections, completion of building and site plan reviews, accepting and processing permit applications, and assisting the public in providing input concerning review and approval of permits and certificates of occupancy.
- Performs inspections of physical buildings, plumbing, and mechanical systems to determine compliance.
- Accepts and processes permit applications and provides advice and guidance as needed.
- Reviews residential building plans, site layouts, maps, specifications, and construction methods for conformance with code provisions.
- Efficiently communicates with builders, residents, officials, other inspectors, members of the staff, the public, or other individuals.
The ideal candidate:
- Has proven experience in work involving building inspection, design, or construction.
- Has strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with other reviewing departments, the public, city officials, and developers.
- Is strong in organizational, human relations, and technical skills.
- Can use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision when necessary.
- Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
High school diploma (or GED) required, with two years of experience of an increasingly responsible administrative nature in work involving building inspection, design or construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Requires the following valid/current certification/licensure: Valid Driver's License, ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification (or the ability to obtain said certification within six months of hire).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment which includes a motor vehicle, calculator, telephone, camera and flashlight, and construction-related tools such as a probing rod, level, differential pressure gauge, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light to medium work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative and construction-related information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures related to the job of Building Inspector. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Building Inspector.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency related to the job of Building Inspector.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
